Weekend Review June 18-20 Tally Ho to the fore

The Calm before the storm is what we could describe the weekend just gone with next weeks supercharged programmes on the flat and over jumps. Nevertheless we enjoyed some very interesting racing with no less than seventeen Irish bred winners at Naples, Siracusa, Milan, Tagliacozzo and Merano.                                                                          The Premio Binocular on Friday in Naples was won by Rajanna (Rajj-Could Be Anything) bred by Homer Scott’s Lisheen Stud. The six year old was winning for the sixth time for Luigi Di Dio who has a liking for Rajj’s offspring .Afra and Free Live are also in the Roman stable. Rajanna’s full sister Lady Laidlaw is with Kieran Cotter.                                            Saturday’s Milan card was super competitive except for the opening Premio Stresa where Fabio Branca rode the first leg of a very nice treble. Some Respect led coast to coast and the Gleneagles colt was a very comfortable winner from the debutante Caron Demonio (Reliable Man-Cassina De Pomm who won the Dormello). I expect to see the winner contest the Giuseppe De Montel for Grizzetti on June 30.                                                         The Premio Basiano on April fourth saw Larmar get the better of Sopran Nusicaa, Il Ginodellecacce with Ariadeno fourth. Remarkably all four won in San Siro on Saturday. On Friday we suggested keeping an eye on Larmar in the fillies Premio Karla Willer and she duly obliged in very good fashion dominating from start to finish for Mario Sanna and Marco Gasparini. The Fast Company filly is a daughter of Tears In My Eyes who was trained by Evanna Mccutcheon and is bred by her Father Peter and Uncle Hugh. The Mccutcheon’s have a yearling colt out of Tears In My Eyes by Gleneagles and a foal by Saxon Warrior.

Sopran Nausicaa carried 58kgs to victory in the Virginio Lamberti giving five kgs to Khorgos bred by Holborn Trust. Bruno Grizzetti’s horses are back in top form and it augurs well for the Varese based trainer for the rest of the year. Il Ginodellecacce bred by the Tom and Michael Gaffney owned Churchtown House Stud near Mallow lumped 65kgs (10 stone 4) to victory in the Premio Trecate under champion jockey Dario Vargiu. The Pride Of Dubai gelding is clearly on the upgrade and should win a decent prize.

In Siracusa on Saturday Immortal Romance (Society Rock-Sundown) once again proved himself one of the best middle distance horses in Sicily in the Premio Mirosei (2300m) comfortably getting the better of Perego and Mister Guida. The Tally Ho bred gelding was enjoying his eleventh win and will now be aimed at the Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa on July 4 over the course and distance. Ross Ross (Sir Prancealot-Patience A Plenty) trained by Stefano Postiglione completed a Tally Ho double on the card. The Mullingar stud’s influence on Italian racing is impressive . These two wins means that already in 2021 the Westmeath stud has bred twelve winners in Italy while their stallions have had great success with horses like Fayathaan (Parioli photograph above) Haven Park (Royal Mares) Havana Love (2nd Regina Elena) I Am Magnetic and others  have won 400,000 euro in prizemoney up to June 19. Sir Prancealot had another winner in Tagliacozzo on Sunday in the Emirates Breeders Mile where Proiettile was an impressive winner. The P & J O Rourke bred colt will win more races.

In Merano the Newtown Anner Stud bred Urban Hero jumped superbly to win the Premio Or Jack for Raffaele Romano and Gabriele Agus. This fellow will certainly be running in graded company after this. The Merano track next weekend hosts wonderful cards on Saturday and Sunday  featuring the Gran Siepi D’italia (G1) over hurdles on Saturday and the Grande Steeplechase D’Europa (G1) on Sunday along with excellent supporting races.                Flat racing wont be outshone  with the Gran Premio Di Milano on Sunday, the Premio Primi Passi (Phoenix stakes equivalent) and the Premio Giubilio(equivalent to the Gran Premio for fillies) as support on Sunday and also an excellent card on Saturday featuring the Premio Bersaglio for the top sprinters. Remember all the races are live on the site.
