We begin today with what appears to be very good news. MIPAAF The government department in control of racing will cede to the racetracks the payments
of racing from late February 2022. In theory at least this should speed up the payments of winnings to the owners which will alleviate the
serious cash flow issues in Italian racing. The other issues are apparently being looked at but the lack of a 2022 fixture list in late December hardly augurs well.
If the racetracks can pay out winnings in a proper fashion it should finish with a situatiuon where the Giglio Sardo one of the countries principle owners a combination
of two Tuscans and two Sardinians have sent ten horses from Alduino Botti’s stable to Simone Brogi a young Italian trainer doing well in France. It will also deprive the European Pattern Committee the excuse it has used to downgrade Italy’s top races.
Racing at the weekend saw a glut of two year old races all around the country and the Premio Inverno (HPC 2250 metres) in Livorno on Saturday evening. In the Inverno Mr Gualano (Worthadd-Poulkova (Sadlers Wells) caused a surprise coming home at ten to one. Bred by Matt Duffy, trained by Domenico Ginosa and ridden by Gavino Sanna Mr Gualano has enjoyed an excellent 2021 winning three handicap principales the Premio Barbaricina (1750m) at Pisa in February,The Premio Capannelle Trotto(1600m) in Rome in June. A son of the 2010 Derby Italiano and Parioli winner Worthadd and Poulkova also the dam of Passavanti a multiple winner for Fabrizio Camici including the Premio Allevamento. Breeding big handicap winners has been the norm for Matt Duffy in 2021 including the Irish Lincolnshire with Layfayette whose younger brother Clear Emperor was a triple winner during the year for Endo Botti. Howver in Pisa on Sunday the Dragon Pulse three year old was no match for his stablemate Sliding Woman who lumped 61 kilos to a comfortable win in the Premio Harry Bracci Torsi over 1500 metres. The daughter of Footstepsinthesand is a progressive filly who achieved a 94 rating here and who surely has potential for black type in 2022. Eimear Mulhern bred Sliding Woman whose dam La Reine Mambo is a sister to the dual group 3 winner Danson.
Agostino Affe has had a very good year with his two year olds most notably with Don Chicco. In Pisa on Sunday he introduced Red Bourbon a colt by Galileo Gold out of Red Roar(Bred by Tally Ho) who was hugely impressive in the Premio Cesare Turri. One smack of Claudio Colombi’s whip was enough to induce a burst of speed which left his rivals floundering. This is a beutifully bred colt who the Roman based trainer picked up for a mere 7500 guineas at Tattersalls. The dam Red Roar is a sister to the Prix Morny and Robert Papin winner Unfortunately standing at Oak Lodge Stud in Roscrea. Red Roar is also a sister to Look Busy winner of the Temple Stakes(G3) and dam of Keep Busy (runner up in the group 1 Flying Five).Red Bourbon still relatively small has huge scope for improvement and could be anything. The Sicilian had another juvenile winner in Capannelle on Friday when the Michael O Mahoney bred Indian Key (Profitable -Gerash) got the better of a big field in the Premio Peveron (1600m).The dam Gerash was a dual winner at Saint Cloud and is a sister to Mobaco a group 3 and listed winner in France. Another interesting Irish bred two year old winner was Action Painting in the Premio Babbo Natale over 1800 metres in Naples. The French Navy filly bred by John Cronin is out of Sinegronto a sister of Show Me The Money a winner of the Cornwallis Stakes(G3) and dam of Sakhees Song a very smart sprinter for Bruno Grizzetti.
In Villacidro Sardinia today Gaduli De L’Alguer won his fourth race in the Criterium Campidiano over 1800 metres but this time Thor De Sa Matta himself a dual winner gave the Maria Marron bred, trained by Francesco Oppes a race. The Highland Reel colt is keeping his sire in the hunt to be champion sire of juveniles with only ten days to go even though El Kabeir remains in the lead. Gaduli De L’alguer might have one more run in Chilivani before the year end although I thought today his stamina was at its maximum level. The dam Classic Falcon won at a mile and is a sister to the Round Tower(G3) winner Dingle View.
Racing this week will be at Varese on Wednesday,Thursday in Pisa featuring the Premio Prova Di Assagio Steeplechase over two miles. This will be the last jumping meeting of the year and even now the champion trainers title is wide open between Raffaele Romano and Josef Vana Junior with the latter ahead by a mere €10,000. Friday Livorno and Rome will share the bill with two superb meetings on Sunday (Saint Stephens/Boxing day)in Siracusa featuring the Premio Gaetano Francicanava (HPC) and the Criterium De Inverno but especially at San Rossore Pisa where we will have the last black type race of the year in the Premio Piazza Dei Miracoli(LR 2200m) plus no less than three handicap principale’s in what promises to be one of the most entertaining days of the year. Naples will race on Monday. We will have a full preview of Pisa and Siracusa’s meetings on Friday and remember all of the action all over Christmas is live on
