What a race we enjoyed with The Gran Premio Citta Di Varese (HPA 2250m)on Saturday evening.Sara Del Fabbro it appeared had given a master class of winning from the front on the outsider Ragout only for Lagomago and Dario Di Tocco to finish like a train to win going away with stablemate Sopran Kalypso third and the ever consistent top weight Midnight Seaaon fourth.
Del Fabbro took the lead after 100 metres and the Federica Tomasini trained grey seemed to have everything under control while Di Tocco seemed to be going nowhere on Lagomago until he found a little room 300 metres out and the son of Belardo and the Invincible Spirit mare Navette showed a devastating turn of foot to win a memorable 71st running of the Citta Di Varese.
Lagomago’s dam is a sister to Real World who beat all but Baaeed in both the Queen Anne and the Lockinge this season. In 2021 he won the Prix Daniel Wildenstein(G2) under Frankie Dettori plus a Group 3,a listed and the Royal Hunt Cup under Marco Ghiani.
She is also a half sister to the Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain.
The grand dam Nafura is a sister to Dubai Destination and Librettist so an exciting family.
Lagomago the only three year old in the field was stepping up in trip and I imagine Bruno Grizzetti will be thinking of listed and group races for this colt bred by Littlejohn Bloodstock on the shores of Lough Ennell in Mullingar. They have a half sister by Phoenix Of Spain going to Tattersalls Book 2 yearling sales at Newmarket.
There were some interesting juvenile winners over the weekend.Kinkawa gave the Criterium Varesino form a boost by winning the Premio SIRE over 1500 metres at Varese from a very green Love Tear.
Dark Chocolate like Love Tear a daughter of Albert Dock was a very easy winner at Naples over 1400 metres on Friday and this filly now two from two could be anything. Also at Naples Sebastiano Guerrieri’s Silverbumbum made a winning debut at the expense of more experienced opponents. The colts sire Samysilver has now had five juvenile runners all of who are winners of ten races including the best 2yo filly we have seen so far Talentuosa winner of the Mantovani.
Another two year old Coanna De Nurra trained by Antonio Cottu made a winning debut at Chilivani on Saturday.By the Dewhurst winner Tout Seul out of a Dubawi mare she looked a filly with some potential. All of these are home breds another example of the slow revival of the Italian industry.
Follonica’s Premio Tosca Vans a valuable handicap over 1650 metres was won in most impressive style by Mesocco a six year old son of Power bred by Aidan Sexton who breeds more winners in Italy than any other Irish stud.
At Merano on Sunday Pavel Tuma’s Czech challenger Roncal gave an exhibition of front running and dazzling jumping in the G3 novice chase the Premio Piero e Franco Richard over 3800 metres.Jan Faltejsek let the five year old bowl along in front with Zio Reginaldo always close up and Lucechericama keeping them at close quarters. Vinci Per Noi and the very disappointing French import Gracieux Du Logis never apppeared to have a chance. Roncal jumped marginally better than his inexperienced opponent who had been impressive on his debut and always had just a little bit in hand right to the finish. Raffaele Romano’s Lucechericama showed a lot of improvement to be a good third. No doubt we will see all three in the Steeple Chases D’Italia in four weeks.
Racing this week will be at Varese on Wednesday,Corridonia on Thursday,Friday Naples, Saturday both Florence and Siracusa will have the first meetings of their Autumn campaign. On Sunday there are meetings at Livorno, Merano featuring two Group 3’s the Ptemio Mipaaf chase over 3900 metres and the juvenile hurdle the Ettore Taggliabue the last trial for the Gran Criterium D’Autunno and Capannelle will begin its Autumn campaign with a very nice eight race card.
