Weekend Review April 9-10

Whew! what a weekend both in Italy and abroad.Interesting meetings on Saturday in Florence and Siracusa and in Milan on Sunday but the fireworks were at San Siro on Saturday and Capannelle on Sunday. We will begin with Rome on Sunday where a terrfic edition of the Premio Signorino (LR 1800m) took place. All the money was for the son of Mujahid,Vis A Vis 2020 champion juvenile and winner of the Natale Di Roma. Last years winner Attimo Fuggente, the Ribot winner Cantocorale, Frozen Juke and Rio Natal were seen as his biggest opposition. But racing being racing it was another son of Mujahid who stole the day as Tiaspettofuori last years Botticelli winner who came late to deprive Cantocorale with Vis A Vis third and Frozen Juke fourth with Attimo Fuggente once again fading quickly.Devis Grilli had dreams of winning the derby after last years Botticelli but Tiaspettofuori was a dificult character who has since been gelded which may be part of the reason for his consistency this year. The Italian bred also loves Capannelle and needs a cut in the ground to be seen at his best which he enjoyed on Sunday.Bruno Grizzetti wont be too disappointed with Cantocorale who was conceding six pounds and a little fitness I would say as the Scuderia Blueberry owned colt’s main target will be the Presidente Della Repubblica(G2 €200,200)over course and distance in May.

At the weekend Italy’s two star older females returned to the track with different results.Aria Importante the Queen of San Siro was back in the Premio Miss Gris where Dario Vargiu let her amble on in front with little pace. The daughter of Twilight Son always had too much for EC racings good filly Deadline who was receiving three kilos. It was an unsatisfactory race in a slow time but fair play to Blueberry who must have been tempted to send their star to a top stallion.
A similar situation with Telepatic Glances who lost her unbeaten record in the Premio Azzurina in another slowly run mile at Rome.Take nothing away though from the Ashling Burke bred Haven Park who showed once again what a consistent mare she is.Last year’s Royal Mares winner will take beating in any female event at seven or eight furlongs.Even though there were excuses Endo and Cristina must have been bitterly disappointed with Telepatic Glances defeat and just maybe she isn’t quite the filly she was before her injury.Only time will tell.

We enjoyed a multitude of classic trials over the weekend, one of the best and most exciting was the Premio Gardone at Milan on Saturday where Lord Sakay and Vincere Insieme fought out a terrific battle before the Macha Bloodstock bred Antonio Marcialis trained son of Holy Roman Emperor got the decision by a short head.Champion juvenile Don Chicco ran on late in fourth behind the German challenger Fire Of The Sun.All four are likely to meet again in the Parioli on May 1.The other 2000 trial the Alfonso Doria at Rome was won by the Robert and Amber Byrne bred Kronangel. This was the National Defence colts third race and second win. EC racings horse had a neck to spare on the talented but tempremental Vento D’Estate who was more intent on biting than passing Kronangel.

The Premio Saccaroa an important prep race for the Regina Elena was won in terrific style by the Austin Curran bred Prichi who was three lengths ahead of her stablemate White Lips at the line with the Con Marnane bred Macasai third. On this showing Prichi will have every chance in the 1000 on May 1 as will Alduino Botti’s super tough Raven’s Pass filly Amalaura who won the listed Premio Seregno at Milan on Saturday.Six starts four wins two seconds tells the atory of a filly who wont go down without a fight on May1.Runner up the inexperienced Aclaim filly Woman Of Ciprea with the Ringfort stud bred Azul Bahia (Profitable) third.
The Premio Guido Clerici saw the seasonal debut of Derby second favourite Arrival. The son of Australia and Alta Fedelta certainly did not disappoint as he gave the Turlough Boylan bred Cime Tempestose (Gleneagles)two kilos and won a tad comfortably with yet another progeny of Aclaim Chelsea Gardens third. Both of the placed horses had the advantage of a run this year but Arrival looks a really quality horse.

Is Arutas (El Kabeir -Moriches) was impressive in the Premio Lorenzo Camuffo three lengths too good for Lucky Ambriel with Her Grace third.Joe Banaghan bred the Cascione/Guerrieri trained filly who has certainly improved from two to three and enjoyed all of the 2100 metres.
The Gleneagles filly Wintry Flower won the 2000 metre Alberto Chantre from the German invader Walkin’ On The Sun with Alduino Botti’s fast finishing Arcano,Never Ending story third. We will surely see most of the principles from both fillies races again before the Oaks.

Abroad two group 2 wins for Umberto Rispoli in California.Gianluca Bietolini’s great mare Grand Glory returned after the winter in the Prix Zarkava winning comfortably.Next up will be a group 2 in Saint Cloud before trying to repeat her Prix Jean Romanet(G1) win of 2021.At the Curragh both group 3 winners had Italian links.Markaz Paname a rare three year old winner of the Gladness Stakes is a son of Markaz now standing at Siena’s Allevamento Renaccino while the Alleged Stakes winner Layfayette’s brother Clean Emperor is with EC racing both bred by Matt Duffy.

Racing this week is at Rome on Tuesday,Milan with the Premio Piero Parelli hurdle on Wednesday,Florence on Thursday,Rome on Friday with the seasons opening two year old races.Chilivani and Florence will race on Saturday,Milan on Sunday and three competitive cards on Easter Monday at Siracusa(Criterium Aretuseo),Rome (Premio Mario Peretti and also Milan.
