San Rossore after two years of Covid 19 returned to enjoy the Premio Pisa almost in the style of its best days with a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday of top class racing in a delightful atmosphere.Franco Dettori four times runner up in the race finally broke his duck when Il Grande Gatsby simply cruised to victory four lengths clear of the Daumier winner Bahja Del Sol.The Thomas Rook winner Vecello was a nose back in third with Sunny River making his seasonal debut fourth. Dettori was delighted with the Churchill colt out of the five time winner Irene Watts.Frankie believes there is more improvement to come and that EC racings colt will have a great chance in the Parioli.However he raised a doubt as to whether he can ride the horse as he may be claimed by John Gosden to ride the ante post favourite for the Newmarket 1000 guineas Inspiral on the same day.The Milanese jockey was thrilled with the atmosphere at San Rossore describing it as magical.

We predicted that Brigante Sabino (Zoffany – Natural Bloom bred by Robert Ogden) would win the other Black type race on the card the Regione Toscana over eleven furlongs which he duly did but it was incredibly close. Dario Vargiu got the better of Clarenzio Fan and Tore Sulas by a nose with Dettori third on the Rabidus bloodstock bred Total Euphoria.Clarenzio Fan over the Winter has returned to the form where he was allowed to take his chance in the Derby and here in receipt of four pounds almost got his first black type win. Brigante Sabino was winning for the sixth time in eleven starts,three black type race including the Gran Premio D’Italia.
Love Shots (Cotai Glory bred by Sandro Garavelli)won the three year old mile handicap while the Footstepsinthesand horse You Make Me Shevar won the Premio Enrico Camici a handicap principale B over 1200 metres.The other big handicap the San Rossore over ten furlongs saw the Eimear Mulhern bred Sliding Woman fail oh so narrowly to the veteran. Amyntas a local bred son of Desert Prince who was winning his fifteenth race and including premiums almost a quarter of a million Euro.

Milan was the venue for jumping fans where Paolo Favero suffered a frustrating day with three runner up positions.The featured Premio Giulio Caccia (LR) over two miles a traditional prep for the Gran Corsa Siepi di Milano was won by last years winner the Czech raider Ivo.Pavlina Bastova’s horse had a head to spare over the enigmatic Passion Return ( bred by Kilnamoragh Stud ) with another Czech challeger Natam third.

The featured steeple chase the Ptemio Spegasso over 3600 metres was won by the French bred Black Watch with the Mcmullan/O Grady bred Shambara a half length back second and Kontraargument third.It is probable that the principles will appear in the Staffe D’Oro at the end of the month.

On the level at Milan the Devis Grilli trained Mactan Falls(Free Eagle – Mujadil Shadow bred by Kildaragh Stud) a half brother to three top Italian sprinters Orpen Shadow, Titus Shadow and Choiser Shadow won the sprint three year old maiden and could be anything.

Racing this week will be Rome on Tuesday,Milan on Wednesday where Grizzetti’s top sprinter Agiato opens his campaign in the Premio Oleggio where he will be opposed by the likes of Collins Bay,Storm Part,and Mitrandir.Pisa has a meeting Thursday while on Friday Rome will be joined by Chilivani where the 2022 Sardinian campaign begins.Saturday will also see Florence’s first meeting of 2022 while Milan will have two of the most important guineas trials the Gardone for colts and the Seregno for the females.
Siracusa also races on Saturday while on Sunday we will have ‘Galoppo”at San Siro and Capannelle. We will preview all the action on Friday.
