The Prix Morny(G1) in Deauville on Sunday over 1200 metres, the Prix Daphnis (G3) for three year olds over 1600 metres and the Premio Merano (Lr) also for three year olds over 2200 metres in Merano are the big attractions for Italian fans this weekend. I think its fair to say the Morny is the best two year old race in Europe so far this year. We will have the first three from the Richmond stakes(G2) in Goodwood Assymmetric, Khunan and Gubbass and lets remember the fourth Ebro River then won the Phoenix Stakes(G1). Also from England are the Norfolk Stakes(G3) winner Perfect Power, Armor winner of the Molecomb Stakes(G3) and from Ireland the Queen Mary(G2) winner Quick Suzy and Velocidad winner of the Airlie stud stakes(G2). The home defence will be led by the Prix De Cabourg(G3) winner Have A Good Day and the Andre Fabre trained Trident third that day. Baghed certainly gave Windstormblack’s form a boost in the Robert Papin(G2) when second to Atomic Force but clearly will be up against serious opposition here. Nevertheless he ran very well in the Primi Passi and Papin and will have the services of Cristain Demuro always a big help.
The Prix Daphnis tomorrow for three year olds over a mile will see the winner of the Italian 2000 guineas and the runners up in the French and German equivalents in contention. There will be three Italians, Gianluca Bietolini’s Colosseo runner up in the Poule D’Essai Des Poulains to St Marks Basillica is an obvious candidate Fayathaan the winner of the Premio Parioli will be ridden by Gerard Mosse. The Mehmas colt bred by John And Ann Foley in Limerick will need to be on top form to contend here as he will also face Best Lightning runner up in the Mehl Mulhens In Cologne and Adhamo winner of the Prix La Force(G3). An interesting runner is Team Botti’s Bellharbourmusic a lightly raced but promising individual who will have Ioritz Mendizabal on board.
Team Botti will be represented by three colts in the Premio Merano(LR) over 2200 metres on Sunday. Atzeco one time considered a big contender for the Derby Italiano will have Fabio Branca on board after a good run when second in the Gran Premio D’Italia over 2400 metres. Glenearn now with Dario Vargiu was a length and a half back in fourth that day and this slightly shorter trip might suit the Gleneagles colt a half brother to Romantic Wave. The third Botti representative Bull Dozer and Endo’s Reggiolo cannot be ruled out nor can Jerome Reynier’s two French challengers Rumbles Of Thunder and Quickstep Girl. The last named filly bred by Tullpark in Nenagh and owned by Emma Kennedy is a half sister to Max Vega and was a good winner of a conditions race in Nimes. If either Atzeco or Glenearn are to have hopes in the big autumn races they will need to win this.
The Premio Bi-Elle Di Luca Bruschi is one of the principle trials for the Gran Criterium D’Autunno (G1) the Triumph hurdle equivalent if you like. Raffaele Romano has had a strangle hold on the three year old hurdle race all year and with three strong contenders he may will win this as well. Callistemon a high class two year old on the flat made a brilliant debut over obstacles then disappointed before being runner up in the Group 2 Giulio Berlingieri at San Siro. Heichal was a good winner over course and distance in July while King Power won a similar race over course and distance in June. The Churchtown House bred Zankala a daughter of Zoffany represents Paolo Favero and was an excellent second here to Boule De Neige at the start of the month. The Polish challenger Isatis De L’ecu is already a Merano winner and is not without a chance. Callistemon to justify an attempt at the big prize in September.
Siracusa reopens after a short summer break on Sunday with an interesting two year old race the Premio Alceo over 1100 metres. The Rathasker stud bred Bright Fountain already a winner here over 1200 should start favourite but others with a chance include Lady Affaire, Pivoas and the Morgan Cahalane bred Nikitis. In Naples on Saturday the Premio Luci A San Siro for two year olds over 1600 metres is an open race. It is typical of Neapolitan two year old races in that half of the field are Irish bred and indeed here two of these Autre Etape (Slade Power) and Vendicari (Buratino) are serious candidates. Also on Saturday but in Varese Bruno Grizzetti runs four of his two year olds in the Premio Toeplitz over 1000 metres. Jockey arrangements suggest Damnatio Memoriae a son of Starspangledbanner bred by K & S Consulting is the most likely to win.
