Home Previews and Reviews WEEKEND PREVIEW APRIL 9-11

Capannelle puts on one of those cards on Sunday that cries out for a huge crowd.A very nice Spring day is forecast for the Eternal City.An eight race card with a high quality listed race over nine furlongs, the last two trials for the Parioli and Regina Elena. Also a Derby trial called after Italy’s last Prix de L’arc winner, and four super competitive handicaps of a very high standard, but sadly in Rome as all across Europe nobody can as yet attend a race meeting.

Out Of Time the darling of Italian race fans disappointed on his reappearance in the Natale di Roma fourth to the Michael Mcglynn bred, Fabio Marchi trained Frozen Juke. The latter has a wonderful record in races up to a mile ten wins in twelve starts, but now in the Premio Signorino(LR)he reverts to nine furlongs and Out Of Time can gain revenge.

However with the extra distance he will have to contend with Baptism a good second to Brasilian Man in the Premio Circo Massimo(LR) over ten furlongs with yesterdays Regione Toscana winner Ornais back in third.Baptism a Sea The Stars colt bred by William And Emma Kennedy of Nenagh was fourth in last year’s Derby and is improving.A thrilling contest is on the cards Out Of Time to open his 2021 account.

The trials for the Regina Elena have been excellent with at least five impressive winners.Sunday’s Premio Saccaroa has fifteen wannabees but two of them stand out as potential contenders on April 26.Al Siq was hugely impressive on her first two starts on good ground at San Siro including the listed Mantovani.Bruno Grizzetti held her in such high esteem that he sent her to Longchamp for the Marcel Boussac in which Jessica Marcialis became the first Woman to ride a group 1 winner in France.Sadly for Grizzetti Al Siq was injured in the race and hasn’t been seen since so her reappearance is eagerly awaited. Her most interesing opponent is Memo De L’Alguer from Giada Menato’s Sardinian stable.Sardinia is noted for its wonderful jockeys but classic contenders from the Mediterranean Island are rare.Memo de L’Alguer was bred by Sandra Russell of Lismacue Stud in Bansha Co Tipperary. The Mehmas filly won her two starts in Chilivani very impressively both over a mile before being sent to Rome for the listed Criterium Femminile.Largely unconsidered she was the only one in a large field to challenge the Dormello(G2) runner up Havana Love. This is a race to watch and learn from.

The Colts trial the Alfonso Doria has another long term absentee Doctor Strange as probable favourite.Agostino Affe’s Adaay colt won two good races, was third in the Primi Passi to Aria Importante and fourth in the Gran Criterium to Vis A Vis.The Sean O Sullivan bred Please Exceed was a close third in the Daumier with Captain Miki fourth. An interesting runner is Sicily’s best two year old of 2020 Guida’s Force. The Lethal Force colt was bred by Niall Radford of R and M Bloodstock. Please Exceed to win from Doctor Strange.

The Derby trial is the Premio Tony Bin called after the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and dual Gran Premio Di Milano winner.Trained by Luigi Camici cousin of the great Enrico and ridden by John Reid the Roman trained horse was a true champion winning the Federico Tesio just seven days before the Arc in that Autumn of 1988.Glenearn so impressive in his second start at two was hugely disappointing in the Brigadier Gerard and is on a retrieving mission.Cantocorale a son of Helmet now of course standing in Italy was last seen in the Berardelli when fourth in November.Just behind him that day was Sebastiano Guerrieri’s filly Linosa who has had a run behind Telepatic Glances and on home soil she can cause a surprise.

There are four fantastic handicaps in Capannele on Sunday and the one of the highest quality is the WWF over 1500 metres where the 2020 Premio Ribot (G3) winner Fulminix carries 10 stone 4.  Other pattern winners Pensiore D’Amore and Black Horus are near the top of the weight’s but on 8 stone 3 the improving Garuk could cause an upset. Bred in Galway by Anne Marie Burke the Silvia Amendola trained colt has had two good wins in Naples over the winter and ran a nice prep in Rome last time out. The only worry is that the 1500 metres might be a little sharp as his dam Maughami was a daugther of Grey Way the dam of Way to Paris last years Grand Prix de Saint Cloud winner and Distant View a dual group 1 winner over ten furlongs.

Milan Stages a modest card with big numbers on Sunday, while on Saturday we have three cards from Siracusa in the far South, to Florence in the middle and San Siro in the North. The Highlight in Milan is the Premio Alberto Chantre an Oaks trial.Rainbow Bright a daughter of Awtaad bred by George Kent of Knockenduff Stud in Tramore was a very good third to Telepatic Glances in the Torricola and might have too much for the Aidan Sexton bred Sopran Basilea and Sadalsuud.

Enjoy and dont forget to watch on the results section.
