Tuscan nights at the seaside Premio Livorno

A Wonderful tradition returns to the Ippodromo Caprilli on Sunday as the Livorno track celebrates one of its big Summer nights with the last race finishing near midnight.Livorno is the Tuscan seaside resort par excellence and after seven long years race fans can enjoy a wonderful Summer meeting with temperatures still into the mid twenties. After the sad closure of the track in 2015 and the haste of its reopening in 2021 the operators have faced some harsh criticism for the lack of lighting and the state of the turf and stands, but to be fair they have achieved quite a bit in a relatively short period of time.

Along with the Coppa Di Mare the Premio Livorno (HPB 1500m) is one of the Summer highlights at Caprilli. The 2022 version promises to be a competitive affair with Team Botti between Alduino and EC Racing having half of the field.
Top weight, after winning the 2021 Premio Daumier Closer Look was considered a live guineas candidate but since then while regularly placed in high class company almost always finds one or two too good for him.
Ranger In Paradise beautifully bred out of a sister to Sea Of Class and three other Oaks winners including Cherry Collect two of whose progeny were sold in Japan this week for €1.25 million.
The Holy Roman Emperor five year old is no mug in his own right winning seven times including the Premio Doria and the 2021 Premio Federico Regoli(HPC 1500m) and will have the invaluable assistance of Tore Sulas in the saddle. The third candidate from Alduino and Stefano is the promising three year old Celtico Arcano but he appears to have a lot to do for a second season campaigner.
In big Italian handicaps one can never ever rule out the Marco Gasparini/Francesca Turri team and with a mere fifty kilos and Gavino Sanna in the saddle Canticchiando will be many peoples fancy on Sunday night but the one I fancy most is the Eimear Mulhern bred Sliding Woman trained by EC Racing. The Footstepsinthsand fillies last run saw her runner up in a HPC over 1600 metres at Rome and with Dario Di Tocco now jointly leading the jockeys championship with Dario Vargiu, in the saddle, she has a big chance.

The Gasparini/Turri team might find compensation with Solo Mia bred by Castlefarm Stud in the fourth while Lord Grey(Markaz) bred by Paul Monaghan a spectacular eleven length winner over the 1950 metres last time out should win the Premio Terazza Mascagni for Devis Grilli and Sulas.

At Siracusa on Saturday the Criterium D’Estate(1400 m) will decide who is the best Sicilian two year old for the first half of the season.Favourite will be Miss Breath (Bated Breath) bred by DG Iceton of Tara Stud and trained by Carmello Zapulla. Unbeaten in two starts she will be up against it with American Pie just a neck behind last time out over the course and distance but now one and a half kilos better off.

At Varese on Saturday evening another interesting two year old race the Premio Gianclemente Terzaghi over 1500 metres will see another Eimear Mulhern bred filly challenging for honours. Finisterra (Charm Spirit) was a good winner at Milan before being sixth behind Royal Lea in the Vittorio Crespi(LR).However she might find stablemate Sopran Blakey(Gustav Klimt) bred by the Old Carhue Stud and Kinkawa too good on this occasion. Kinkawa has been chasing Talentuosa around San Siro on her last two runs while Grizzetti’s colt won on his debut at Milan from Foxy Lady.

Merano on Sunday opens its Summer/Autumn jumping and flat season which will have seventeen meetings until October 23.The absolute pinnacle will be the two day festival on the last weekend of September when we will see the best of Italian and Central European “Ostacoli”.The feature on Sunday will be the Premio Alpha Two steeple chase for four year olds where the Polish challenger Ocean Life will take on four from Raffaele Romano and two from Paolo Favero.I take the Pole, Callistemon and Black Watch to fight it out with Wroblewski’s horse to win.

This evening at Agnano the remarkable Frozen Juke( bred by Michael Mcglynn) won the one time group 3 Premio Ippodromi Partenopei over 1800 metres. This was the son of Frozen Powers fifteenth win three of which were black type and around a quarter of a million Euro won.
Fabio Marchi’s six year old was a cosy winner from Los Andes with Bell Imbusto third and Luciano Vitabile’s interesting import Jalmoud fourth. The latter by New Approach out of the Epsom and German Oaks winner Dancing Rain hasn’t run in two years when he was a listed winner, runner up in the Eugene Adam(G2) and third in the Gran Prix De Paris(G1).

Also at Naples Samybumbum (Samysilver-Ceoldrama) won the Premio Jasmine.the Sebastiano Guerrieri trained juvenile is a half sister to Teresa Mendoza who won the listed Dubai Free Dash st(LR) on Derby day at the Curragh for Ken Condon. Remarkably two other off spring of Ceoldrama have also won in the past twelve months Iva Feeling at Dundalk and Lizzy The Best for Alduino Botti at Varese and Rome.
Perhaps even more remarkable, the sire Samysilver has had four juvenile runners in 2022 all of whom have won, winning eight races from twelve starts including Talentuosa the best Italian juvenile filly seen so far in 2022.

At Follonica this evening the progressive track featured the valuable Premio Buca Del Fate which was won by the Rio De La Plata five year old Sepius.Follonica in many ways is an example for the rest of Italian racing even though it only races on sand. Many English courses would envy its number of runners while patrons are looking forward to its biggest day yet on August 26 when it will celebrate the Premio Citta Di Follonica (HPB).
