The Poet From Sorrento and a Two year old feast Weekend review Oct 1-3

The German horse named after the Sorrento Poet Torquato Tasso caused a little stir in Longchamp and certainly gave a boost to the form of Mark Prescott’s Alpinista and Peter Schiergen’s Nerium runner up in last years Gran Premio Del Jockey Club. This years Jockey Club due to be run on October 24 along with the Premio Dormello and the Gran Criterium still doesn’t have a definite venue but the hopes are getting stronger in Milan that San Siro will be ready. The Vittorio Di Capua(G2) Italy’s premier mile race will now take place in Capannelle this day week along with the group 3 Premio Verzieri

On the home front it was all about the two year olds as we had a glut of interesting races leading to the big two races on October 24. Windstormblack has been arguably the best two year old in Europe over six furlongs in 2021 and the Primi Passi form got yet another boost on Sunday in the Criterium Nazionale(LR) 1200 metres when The Kings Horses(Time Test – Natty Bumppo) returned after almost one hundred days absence to comfortably win the listed six furlong contest from the Tom Jones(Carrickmacross) bred Agostino Affe trained All My Glory (Cotai Glory-Rafakova) who ran very well. Gianluca Vericelli’s colt was winning his third race in four starts his only defeat being that third behind Windstormblack and the Robert Papin Runner up Baghed in the Primi Passi.

Some Respect (Gleneagles- Sciolina) will if fit start a warm favourite for the Gran Criterium after yet another spectacular performance in the Premio Vittorio Riva(LR) over 1500 metres. Bruno Grizzetti’s juvenile just blew Don Chicco(El Kabeir-Otrooha) and Bahja Del Sol(The Gurkha – Bahja bred by Joe O Leary) away with a devastating display of front running. Don Chicco had already won the Giuseppe De Montel(Lr) and Bahja Del Sol had been very impressive in his two starts but neither could lay a hand on Some Respect who cruised to victory in the mould of a champion. The Varese trained juvenile was winning his third important race on the bounce after similar easy wins in the Criterium Varesino and the Premio Delle Aste. Some Respect’s biggest test will come on October 24 but it will take a very good horse to get the better of him on this form. Team Botti fancied Bahja Del Sol after his first two runs but it will have to be some of their other smartly breds who will oppose Grizzetti’s colt in the Gran Criterium.Without doubt the most obvious at this stage is Vincere Insieme(Exceed and Excel-Loritania) who was super impressive on Sunday in the Premio Fiuggi over 1600 metres when a comfortable winner from Dormello’s dual winner Alsini. The Anthony Byrne bred Il Sindicalista and the John Little bred Lagomago both disappointed a little after earlier impressive wins but the winner has a lot of promise. The Dam won the previously mentioned Premio Verziere(G3) over 2000 metres in 2015.

Unlike 2020 when we had some outstanding juvenile fillies this years crop so far with one exception dont appear to be of the same standard. The Premio Coolmore(LR) principle trial for the Premio Dormello also on October 24 was typically inconclusive with Sebastiano Guerrieri’s Queen Rouge giving the Rome based trainer yet another big two year old winner but this time in the stewards room as on the track the Grizzetti trained Tower Of Silence was a short head winner but the stewards demoted Cirano’s full sister to second after interference in the last 100 metres. The Cloneymore Farm Athboy bred Botti trained Terra Del Sole was one and three quarter lengths away in third on only her second start.

Alduino Botti introduced two more smart juveniles over the weekend in Arrival(Australia- Alta Fedelta) a half brother to Brasilian Man.In the 1800 metre Premio Garim he just got the better of another Dormello juvenile Tempesti a son of Albert Dock who is having a promising opening season in Italy. Atamisque (Highland Reel – Aury touch) could be a filly to watch. She won comfortably from Endo Botti trained Wiry Touch in the mile Premio Ola.The Dam was a dual listed winner over a mile. The Endo Botti/Cristina Brivio team had a good winner in Chiaroscuro(Cotai Glory-Loumarin) bred by Philippa Proctor Quinns Foxland Stud who had been second on her debut to Island Of Love easily the most impressive Italian juvenile filly.

I have heard some people using some snide remarks about the value of Italian group races recently but obviously Godolfin werent listening paying 800,000 sterling for a Dubawi filly out of Longina third in the Carlo Vittadini behind Endo Botti’s Kaspersky or the buyer of the Lope De Vega colt out of God Given sister of the Lydia Tesio winner Postponed who paid 725000 sterling both at Tattersalls yesterday.
