The opening guineas trials on Sunday at Pisa and Rome threw up some interesting challengers for May 1.Three of the four were won by home breds as were the two big races for the older brigade over a mile and ten furlongs.Only at Capannelle’s sprint meeting on Friday did Irish breds dominate with the Anthony Byrne bred Il Sindicalista showing his class.
Swipe Up (Holy Roman Emperor – Salmon Rose) was a comfortable winner of the Premio Ceprano Ruler Of The World over Romes mile and will be a real candidate for the Regina Elena.Endo Botti and Cristian Brivio’s filly was bred by George Kent’s Knockenduff stud in Tramore and is a sister to two good winners. Swipe Up was second on her debut to the subsequent champion filly Atamisque with the high class Insomma third. The daughter of Salmon Rose herself a sister to the Dubai World Cup and Prix Conseil De Paris winner Prince Bishop was a very comfortable winner from the Criterium Femminile third Macasai (bred by Con Marnane).EC racing may give her another run before the 1000 to garner more experience.
The other Regina Elena trial at Pisa had the already mentioned Insomma as favourite but the Havana Gold filly was easily put in her place by her stablemate Full of Champagne.Alduino and Stefano’s winner is a daughter of Full Drago one of the best Italian middle distance horses of the past decade winner of the Gran Premio Di Milano, the Jockey Club and the Federico Tesio twice. A clearly improving filly who might have a better chance in the Oaks rather than the mile classic.
The Parioli trial the Premio Arconte Capella Sansevero was won impressively by another Botti outsider Dalek by the brilliant Italian sprinter Plusquemavie who is having success with a limited number of runners.Dalek unraced at two won on his debut before finding Il Grande Gatsby too good over nine furlongs. He simply destroyed the field here finishing four lengths clear of the favourite Vento D’Estate by Dabirsim out of the Regina Elena winner Mi Raccomando.
At Pisa the Premio Thomas Rook threw up another surprise when the Dormello bred Vecello got the better of the Dormello trained and bred favourite Alsini. The winner a son of Helmet out of the Azamour mare Emilia is an inconsistent sort but Diego Dettori will get the best out of him.
Two of the 2021 top three year olds both sons of Mujahid opened their four year old career’s impressively. Vis A Vis 2020 champion two year old came with a late run under Dario Vargiu to comfortably get the better of Closer Look and Frozen Juke. I would expect to see all three in the Natale Di Roma(LR) on March 20.
Tiasspetofuori last years Botticelli winner was a length and a half too good for the Frankel colt Vento Di Passioni with Luciano Bietolini’s Prince Appeal third in the ten furlong Premio Ribeiro named after the Irish Derby winning son of Ribot.I also expect to see the principles again on March 20 this time in the Circo Massimo(LR)
On Friday at Rome the Irish breds did shine with three important wins all over six furlongs.Il Sindicalista 98 rated as a juvenile won for the second time in his three year old career with a very easy win in the Premio Raffaelo for Sebastiano Guerrieri and Carlo Fiocchi. The son of Bungle Inthejungle bred by Anthony Byrne is now five wins from ten starts and appears equally good at six and seven furlongs.
Purciaretta a daughter of Cotai Glory bred by Glacken View in Neneagh promises to be a very smart filly for the EC racing team.In the Premio Sinni she just got the better of the smart Queen Rouge who might be stepped up in trip next time.
The most valuable flat event of the weekend the Premio Arnaldo Da Brescia was won by the Viola Daly bred Infinity Light(Dragon Pulse -Hoppsan) who just got the better of Thunderback and the remarkable old Ringfort warrior Harlem Shake who has now won almost a quarter of million Euro in prizemoney.
The richest race of the weekend the Premio Steeple Chase Di Treviso over 3500 metres was son by Paolo Favero’s star Big City who was too good for Kings Rock and the favourite Piton Des Neiges. Great things were expected by the Tirolian trainer but Big City never quite delivered but to be fair this was his fifth win in twelve months and his first at listed level.
Racing this week at Rome on Tuesday,Varese Wednesday,Capannelle on Friday and six meetings at the weekend Follonica,Siracusa and Naples on Saturday with Pisa,Rome and Treviso on Sunday.
