The best of the rest April 24-25 preview

  1. A fantastic weekend’s racing apart from the two classics. The oldest race in the World outside of England on Saturday in Florence,an Oaks trial in Milan also on Saturday.Supporting the two classics in Rome on Sunday are the Botticelli one of the two most important Derby trials and a fine conditions sprint for three year old fillies.

The Botticelli brings the Eileen Farrelly/Dermot Murphy bred Sopran Poseidone back into action. This is a huge race for the son of Gutaifan as he looked in need of the race when fourth in Milan behind Bell’Imbusto,Mooney Love and Atzeco. The second and third reoppose here in what is an intriguing race.Throw in the unbeaten Golden Horn colt Golden Dubawi, the Brigadier Gerard winner Brigante Sabino  and Pierpaolo Sbariggia’s Bridge Dress Me and we have a serious race that will have a massive impact on the Derby market.

Meanwhile in Milan a superb national hunt card  with a group 1 hurdle the Gran Corsa Siepi di Milano(€60,000 ) for five year olds and up over two and a half miles. The three year old hurdle championship race the Premio Giulio Berlingieri(G2)€44,000 over two miles and one of the most important four year old hurdles the Corsa Siepi Di 4 Anni(G2)€50,050.Over the bigger obstacles there is the Premio Giacomo Durini over two and a half miles one of the main trials for the Gran Steeplechase Di Milano next month.

We like to think internationally here, but the big jump races in Milan this weekend has runners from France, the Czech republic,Poland and of course Italy. In the Group 1 hurdle the Gran Corsa Siepi Davide Satalia an Italian having a terrific season in France will probably supply the favourite First Daum a winner in Pisa,Dieppe,Lyon and Auteuil.Another French challenger is Edinson with the Czech runner Dominique sure to be involved. The home team include Piton Des Neiges and Live Your Life a veteran of twelve wins and almost a quarter of a million euro in prizemoney. The Berlingieri(G2)for three year old hurdlers promises to be a rematch of the Polish Ocean Life and Raffaele Romano’s Callistemon a high class two year old on the flat. The four year old hurdle is a very interesting affair in which Satalia’s Saint Ex could be the one.

The Oaks trial in Milan on Saturday could see Grizzetti’s expensive Sea The Star filly Cima Star return to winning ways and to lay down a marker for June.

On Saturday in Florence is one of the most competitive handicaps of the year in Italy.Fifteen go the post including six Irish bred’s for the 194th Corsa Dell Arno the oldest flat race in the World outside of England and in normal times a hugely popular race for the Florentine public. It is of course a very open race but there are two I give a final chance to Presidential Suite and Spirit Noir.

A wonderful weekend Enjoy.
