THE BEST MILERS IN ITALY LIMERICK WIN AGAIN AND WEEKEND PREVIEW

In our series on the ratings of Italy’s best horses in different categories today we will look at the milers. In our opinion this is the distance with most strength in depth in Italy with many group standard horses. We will divide the milers into two parts first the three year olds and then the older horses. Without question the three year old fillies at a mile are an exceptional group led by two champions and a third with enormous potential. For many the performance of the year was that of Wakanaka in the Regina Elena (1000 guineas). The Jean Brennan bred bred filly cruised into the lead two furlongs out and simply toyed with Havana Love and Aria Importante who was deprived of third by the fast finishing Memo De L’Alguer (Bred in Tipperary by Sandra Russell). After the race Owner trainer Diego Dettori sold the Power filly to Team Valor who sent her to Bill Mott. Unfortunately Wakanaka suffered a muscle injury which will keep her out of action until next spring. A truly remarkable acheivement for the Kilmallock breeder who equalled her father Joe O Regan who bred the 1984 Regina Elena winner Honey who was ridden by Willy Carson. Aria Importante who had such a rivalry with Wakanaka as a juvenile made a brilliant recovery in the furlong shorter Premio Nogara (LR)and on very fast ground gave a superb performance to get the better of Pensiero D’Amore in the Carlo Vittadini (G3 1600m).Capannelle is not the Twilight Son fillies favourite track but when returning to San Siro over her favourite seven furlong trip she once again showed her true ability in the Premio Chiusura. One of the big disappointments of 2021 was not seeing the 2020 champion juvenile filly Telepatic Glances after her sparkling win in the Premio Torricola. Endo Botti’s filly suffered an injury before the French 1000 which has kept her off the track since but hopefully we will see her again in 2022. The three year old colts at the distance were until the appearance of Cantocorale in the Autumn inferior to their female counterparts. The John and Anne Foley bred Fayathaan got the better of Cirano in the Parioli(2000 guineas) and was clearly the best in the spring but disappointed thereafter his best effort being a six lengths sixth to Aria Importante in the Carlo Vittadini. Vis A Vis 2020 Gran Criterium winner maybe is one of those horses who are best in the Autumn. He was a huge flop in the Parioli but returned to form with two good wins in October before running Aria Importante to a head in the Chiusura (receiving two kilos from the filly).Bruno Grizzetti’s Cantocorale was the revelation of the second half of the year winning the Premio Estate(LR) on Derby day before being third in the Piazzale(G3) to Attimo Fuggente, fourth in the Vittorio Di Capua(G2) and then a wonderful run when winning the Premio Ribot(G3) comfortably from Fulminix and Frozen Juke and in the process receiving a 111 rating from the Racing Post not known for overrating Italian horses. Lord Bay bred in Kilkenny by Nicholas Teehan won the Premio Pisa in the spring and returned to near that form in November when second in the Premio Nearco.

THE TOP TEN ITALIAN THREE YEAR OLDS 1400 TO 1800 METRES 2021. breeders in brackets

109 WAKANAKA (Jean Brennan Kilmallock)
109 ARIA IMPORTANTE (Razza Del Sole)

104 FAYATHAAN (Anne and John Foley)
103 MEMO DE L’ALGUER (Sandra Russell)
103 CIRANO (Rangio Farm)
102 LORD BAY (Nicholas Teehan)

The ratings are equally competitive at the top of the older horses table with many top class performances during the year. The Racing Post gave Rubaiyat a 114 rating for his narrow win over Cima Emergency(113), Wonnemond(112) and Frozen Juke(108) in the Vittorio Di Capua(G2) but for me the performance of the year came in defeat when Pensiero D’Amore failed by a head to give Aria Importante a stone in the Carlo Vittadini. The son of Zoffany needs good ground to be seen at his peak although his best win did come on good to soft in the Bereguardo where he got the better of Fulminix. The most consistent horse of the year was Attimo Fuggente winner of the group 2 Presidente Della Repubblica(1800m) the Group 3 Piazzale(G3 1600m) and an excellent running of the Signorino(LR 1800).We can forgive him his run in the Vittorio Di Capua on heavy ground. Last years two champions Cima Emergency and Out Of Time did not reach the same heights this year but performed well in many races especially Grizzetti’s son of Canford Cliffs..The Michael Mcglynn bred Frozen Juke (Frozen Power-Labba) was a model of consistency winning the Natale Di Roma(LR) second in the Signorino, third in the Ribot and fourth in the Presidente Della Repubblica. The Nanallac Stud bred Jin Jin had only one run in Italy when eight in the Vittorio Di Capua but was the winner of the group 2 Badener Meile and the group 3 Prix Perth.

Racing this weekend features almost 100 two year olds running in eight races and the Premio Inverno (HPC 2250m 15.20 Saturday) The Inverno will see the hosting of Livorno’s first handicap principale after the reopening due to the posponement of the Coppa Del Mare which will now be run on December 29. Eight of the field for the Inverno are bred in Ireland but the likely favourite is Fuoriserie bred in Britain trained by Alduino Botti and ridden by Dario Vargiu. The daughter of Casamento was runner up last time out in a good handicap in San Siro. However I think the time might finally have come for Conquering Eagle to get his head in front. The son of Lope De Vega bred by Ballygallon Stud has been in the frame in ten of his sixteen starts without ever actually winning but he runs off 55,5 kilos here. Voices From War, Lexington Quest and Pinky Guy will have their supporters. Villacidro has been carrying the flag for Sardinia over the past few months and on Monday celebrates a big meeting featuring the Gran Premio Citta Di Villacidro over a mile and a half. Francesco Oppes is triple represented but the Cottu/Marcialis team have two interesting runners off low weights. The Criterium Campidano(1800m) for juveniles will see the Highland Reel colt Gaduli De L’Alguer try to win for the fourth time. The Maria Marron bred was a twelve lengths winner from Thor De La Satta last time out and must be strongly fancied.
