Halfway through another year and the Coolmore vs Godolfin rivalry remains a major talking point in European racing. Meanwhile in much derided Italy a team exists with winnings comparable to these two giants of the turf. Alduino and Stefano father and son are leading the trainers title race in Italy as they have done for most years over the past quarter century.Meanwhile in France Giuseppe and Alessandro are having an excellent season while at Newmarket Marco is leading the charge for Team Botti.
Aidan O Briens Ballydoyle machine in Ireland,Britain and France has won €3.94 million so far in 2022 whilst Charlie Appleby’s operation has perhaps for the first time won more at €4.73 million in the same period. However the dynasty set up by Alduino and Giuseppe Botti up to July 18 has winnings including premiums of €4.37 million whilst attracting very little attention in the European press outside of Italy. What is even more remarkable is that this is all done without any sons of Galileo or Dubawi and just one under performing son of Frankel.
Edmundo Botti a top national hunt and flat jockey set up his stables in Milan in the middle of the last century but sadly died at an early age in 1969 when he was succeeded by his two sons Giuseppe then 23 and Alduino 21. They won the Italian trainers title for the first time in 1973 and have played a dominant role since. The young brothers set up the company Dioscuri named after the mythical twins of Roman mythology and the operation has grown enormously since. Giuseppe’s son Alessandro set up stables at Chantilly in 2009 where he was joined by his Father, After a fine career as a jockey Endo, Giuseppe’s other son set up stables at Pisa where he now operates with his wife Cristina as EC Racing. Meanwhile Alduino’s son Stefano is at his side at Cenaia and Milan whilst his other son Marco has his stables at Newmarket.
But its not just training, its also as owners with Dioscuri and Stefano Botti but also a big breeding operation at Velino and Deni. The enormity of the business can be best gauged by the fact that the Alduino/Stefano part of the team are having far from a vintage season but still well ahead of Bruno Grizzetti in the trainers table.
That rivalry will continue at Le Bettole,Varese tomorrow in the Premio Novello (HPC,1600m) where team Botti will be represented by two three year old fillies Full Of Champagne and Insomma. The local trainer will have three, top weights Sopran Nausicaa and the Ringfort stud bred Azul Bahia as well as my idea of the winner the Night Of Thunder three year old filly Hobby Night. Unraced at two she was thrown in at the deep end in the Regina Elena(1000 gns) but on her last run she romped home by six lengths in a maiden here over 1500 metres. She has lots of scope for improvement and might take this valuable prize. Others to keep an eye on include Lucirex winner of the Jebel Ali(HPB) on Derby day and bottom weight Jar Jar Binks(bred by Skymarc Farm) a nine time winner and with the inform Sara Del Fabbro in the saddle.
Tagliacozzo stages its big meeting of the year on Sunday with the highlight being the Citta Di Tagliacozzo over 2150 metres at 17.35 on Sunday. There are no less than four course and distance winners running as well as top weight Autre Etape winner of the Premio Agriformi(HPB 2400m) in May.The P O Donnell bred Pierpaolo Sbariggia trained Bridge Jazzaraat won this in 2020 but seems to have a lot on his plate with 58.5 kgs.The Dark Side has won over course and distance five times while Sepius won the valuable Bucca Delle Fate at Follonica last time out. Brisighella(Harzand bred by Irish Thoroughbred Capital was a nice second over 1900 metres last time out whilst Zona Cesarini is a tough handicapper who has got the “Commisarios”eye on eleven occasions. Riccardo Cangiano’s horses are flying so we give The Dark Side a very hesitant vote.
The Lynn Lodge Stud and Arthur Finnan bred Sparklealot might be able to carry 62.5 kgs in the 1600 metre Premio Federalpol.
Merano stages an attractive dual purpose card with the highlight over jumps the Premio Giuseppe Chiodini hurdle over 3300 metres where Prince D’Orage returns to the smaller obstacles after a failed attempt at the Grande Steep-Chase De Lyon(G1) last time out.A listed winner over a furlong further last September he will take beating here but Raffaele Romano’s Sky Constellation might just do that. The six year old son of Blu Constellation was a well beaten fourth behind Skins Rock in the group 1 Gran Corsa Siepi D’Italia but on his previous run was a good winner over course and distance.Natam.Mensch and Aventus are others to be considered.
On the level 2020 Derby third Masterwin shoulders 61 kgs in the Premio Gnaid(2200m) but he seems a shadow of his former self. Northsea Star,Glenearn and Rainmaker will all have their supporters but I pick Caterpillar from the Gasparini/Turri team.Already winner of the Citta Di Varese(HPA 2250m) this top class handicapper can win this nice prize.
