Sebastiano Guerrieri’s two year olds have been on fire again this year but none has lit up the juvenile scene as much as the locally bred Talentuosa (Samysilver-Zamra(Azamour).Germano Marcelli has hardly had to move a muscle on Talentuosa in three starts with Saturdays Premio Mantovani(LR 1400m) being no different. Marcelli let her bowl along in front and with 400 metres out everything was under pressure except the cruising leader. Aloa (Cracksman) who started joint favourite began to get a response from Dario Vargiu’s urgent drivings but she made little impact on the winner who simply cantered in with Beirut third and the slow starting Cats Kiss in fourth. Guerrieri now has a bit of a dilemma, will he keep the Alessandra Giudici bred filly for an autumn campaign with the Premio Dormello as the chief objective or will he send Talentuosa to Deauville for some of the big summer prizes. We know she likes fast ground but how will she handle the likely soft terrain that usually pertains for the Dormello? Samysilver as a stallion is a revelation unwanted by practically all Italian breeders outside of the Giudici family he has had only seventeen runners in total with Talentuosa joining last years Coolmore winner Queen Rouge as black type winners. In 2022 all of his four juvenile runners have won including Samybumbum a winner in Naples for Guerrieri this month. The latter is a half sister to Teresa Mendoza winner of the Dubai Dash(LR) at the Curragh on Saturday as well as Alduino Botti’s three year old filly Lizzy The Best.
The colts equivalent the Premio Giuseppe De Montel(LR 1400m) despite being well contested was run in over a second slower than the Mantovani but the winner is a colt of huge promise. Torpedo Blu shaped like a proper racehorse in the last two hundred metres continually responding to Antonio Fresu’s urgings to win a tad comfortably in the end from Antonio Marcialis Magniafuoco who also finished well and Amunini. Torpedo Blu is by Tamayuz out of Taqleed (Sea The Stars-Eswarah).Federico Tesio would certainly have approved of the dam being by a great Epsom Derby champion out of an Epsom Oaks winner. Torpedo Blu is the first foal of Taqleed who is half sister to another unraced progeny of Eswarah in Garmoosha dam of Raabinhah a group two and three winner for Jean Claude Rouget. One can imagine with this pedigree Torpedo Blu will have more improvement in him with the potential to be better over longer distances.
Littlejohn Bloodstock in Mullingar bred another winner for Grizzetti on the card in Lagomago (Belardo-Navette.The dam is a half sister to Real World a multiple group winner for Godolfin. Lagomago was a talented but tempremental juvenile who is clearly beginning to mature. He ran as straight as a dye for Walter Gambarota and held off the late finishing Derby Sixth Il Grande Black (conceding five kilos). He obviously stays 1800 metres well and “Grizzly” might now step him up to 2000. I believe Littlejohn have a yearling out of Navette by Dark Angel and she is in foal to Tally Ho’s Mehmas.
Alduino and Stefano Botti’s challengers didnt have much luck in the big two year old races but Wide Sea (The Gurkha – Savana Pearl) made an impressive debut in the Premio Pallanza. A half brother to Party Goer a winner of the Premio Cumani(G3) Wide Sea is one to keep an eye on.
Dylan Finnucane bred Naas Sweety(Gregorian- Fitrah(Tamayuz) a good winner of the Premio Marchese Del Grillo over 1000 metres at Naples for Cristina Pansini. After three placed efforts the grey filly wasnt winning out of place. She is a sister to three winners all sprinters.
Aurelius In Love ex high class flat horse continued his promising hurdling career for the Aichner/Vana Junior team in the Premio Boccanegra at Merano. The Thomas Lennon bred entire won comfortably from Vinci Per noi and Ocean Life. The latter a Polish challenger is already a group winner in Italy so the skies the limit for the son of Alhebayeb. I would expect to see him have at least one more run before the big September festival.
Another decent performer on the flat was Zio Reginaldo(War Command bred by Joe Bishop) who won three times for Team Botti. Scuderia Aichner purchased him last spring and on Sunday in the Premio Tempo D’Or he won for the second time in three starts. the Josef Vana Junior trained gelding was a very easy winner and is another with potential for a good career over the “Ostacoli”.
We will be back tomorrow with a preview of Thursday’s Gran Premio Di Milano and Premio Primi Passi which are centre pieces of Milan’s final card until september
