Rome’s champions day/Italian buyers in Goffs

On Sunday in terms of quality we will have possibly the best meeting of the year in Capannelle. Thanks to appalling Italian bureaucracy and we will be charitable the stupidity of the European pattern committee three group one races here have been downgraded because according to the EPC the slow payment issue which of course is a crime under EU law and nothing to do with them. But then again a lot of the EPC don’t really like EU law.

Let them answer the reality of 18 foreign runners on Sunday none of course from Godolfin or Coolmore so influential on some of these bodies at the expense of the vast majority of breeders, owners, trainers and jockeys. But enough of the rant and down to the racing. The Premio Roma over ten furlongs will have that great warrior Skalleti (OR121) as favourite. Already in 2021 winner of two group one’s The Prix D’Isaphan and the Grosser Preis Bayerisches Jerome Reynier’s star has won sixteen of his twenty two starts including the 2019 Roma.Tokyo Gold (OR 112) a fellow son of Keydargent will be a formidable contender already winner of the Derby Italiano and runner up in the Belmont Derby(G1) as will Gerard Mosse’s mount Dawn Intello(OR111) winner of Le Coupe De Maisons Laffitte(G3) and most recently third in the Prix Dollar(G2).An interesting runner is Bernadine and Sean Mulryan’s Brentford Hope (OR106) trained by Richard Hughes who on his last start was third in the Prix Perth(G3).Arktisz runner up in the Austrian derby completes the foreign challenge to the home team led by Cima Emergency,Flags Up Derby third Alastor and last years winner Thunderman. The son of Blu Air Force is a triple group 2 winner and is back to his ideal trip after finding the 2400 metres of the jockey club too far.Last years Italian three year old champion Cima Emergency a top class miler winner of the Parioli (2000 guineas) and recently runner up in the Vittorio Di Capua runs here instead of the Ribot and one should never discount Bruno Grizzetti’s wisdom in these races.Champion jockey Dario Vargiu rides Flags Up winner of the Scheibler the traditional trial for this race so a tremendous race in prospect.

The fillies equivalent The Premio Lydia Tesio named after quite possibly the most influential Woman in the history of the sport will have eight runners two from France two from Germany and four Italians. The home team will have three of the first four from the Oaks D’Italia and last years fourth Santa Rita.Eulaila the winner in San Siro lost her unbeaten record in the Verziere(G3) but that in her case was a warm up for this. The Aidan Sexton bred Sopran Basilea won the Verziere from her stablemate Cima Star but Fabio Branca has chosen the Sea The Stars filly. Eudaimonia is a proven mudlark and Gerard Mosse’s mount is fresh from being third in the Prix L’Opera(G1) on Arc day.The other French challenger Omnia Munda Mundis was earlier placed in the Prix De Royamont(G1).From Germany last year’s third No Limit Credit is no stranger to Italy, her best run this year was when third to Skalleti and Grocer Jack in the Grosser Preis Bayerisches(G1). Waldemar Hickst’s Amazing Grace is a group 2 winner over the distance so a hugely competitive version of the Lydia Tesio.

The Premio Ribot also has four Italians facing four visitors with Rubaiyat a frequent and successful visitor having won the Gran Criterium at two and recently a terrific running of the Vittorio Di Capua.Henk Grewe’s horse will be opposed by the third, fourth fifth sixth and seventh in almost a rerun of the latter race.Wonnemond third is dual group 3 winner,Cantocorale a fast improving three year old,Frozen Juke bred by Michael Mcglynn is an out and out miler.Zavaro a group 3 winner in Germany and Padron from France complete the overseas challenge.Last years winner Fulminix and the 2019 winner Out of Time are the other two runners.Alduino Botti’s horse of the year for the past two seasons apparently is a pale shadow of his former self but for the first time this year he will get the ground he loves.

In normal circumstances one would give a confident vote to the champion sprinter in the Premio Aloisi. The Conqueror however is no lover of the heavy ground he will face on Sunday opening the door to Grizzetti’s pair Agiato and Virgin Isla,Royal Mehmas(bred by Paul and Billy Mcenery)and the Czech challenger Ponntos(bred by Liam Butler and Churchtown stud). The latter was sixth in the L’Abbaye and then third to Virgin Isla and Raifan(bred by Kildaragh Stud)

Two top two year old races complete the day.The Guido Berardelli over 1800 metres named after the man who bred and owned the Prix De L’Arc winner Nuccio is a traditional proving ground for the following years Derby.Wonka Willy (bred by Gerald Colclough) a dual winner and runner up in the Campobello is the form horse in the race but Alduino Botti who trained Arrival his conqueror in that race runs three whilst Ardakan comes from Germany and Saidin represents Hungary.

The Divino Amore over the minimum distance sees the Lyons family dually represented by Joanne and Paraics Sopran Marjorie and Ciara and Austins Lollipop Girl. The Endo Botti trained Purciaretta (bred by Glacken View stud) will be a contender as will the Ringfort stud bred Azul Bahia,Boracay(Thomas Creedon) and the Awbeg stud bred Regina Di Roma.

This week at Goffs showed us the importance of the Italian market to Irish breeders with 78 yearlings sold to buyers in the peninsula with prices as low as €1000 and as high as €90,000.Twenty per cent of the entire sale found Italian buyers. Is it not time for the Irish authorities to work with their Italian counterparts in restoring the top Italian races to their historic status as its in Ireland’s interest almost as much as Italy’s.

All the action live here on www.italianhorseracing.com including the most international meeting in the World on Sunday with runners from Italy,France,Germany,Britain,Austria,Hungary and the Czech Republic and of course many many Irish bred runners.
