Naples Big Day and Weekend preview

The Agnano track in Naples will celebrate its big Summer meeting this Saturday with one of the years top sprints Il Primio Citta Di Napoli (LR 1000 m 45,100 Euro) also the Premio Soragna (Handicap Principale B 1800m 3+ fillies). There is also a very high class conditions race the Premio Partenopei  over 1700 metres with only four runners who have official ratings of 109,107,101 and 96 and an excellent handicap principale C over the same distance. The first race is at 7 pm  with the last at 10.30pm so sit back on Saturday evening with us and enjoy a fine evenings racing and marvel at how the Neapolitans can enjoy their racing so late in the evening.

The Citta Di Napoli(9.20 pm) will have champion sprinter The Conqueror going for three in a row in the race. The son of Excelebration will start a hot favourite and will face a small but select field. The younger generation will be represented by Royal Mehmas third in the Tudini and winner of the Toree Astura in Rome as well as Sphere Of Fire second in the Nogara and a close up sixth in the Bersaglio where she showed good early speed. Sopran Vesuvio another three year old was a very good fourth in that race and is a rare Bruno Grizzetti runner this far South. Fabio Bocardelli’s Penalty twice placed in this race is now a seven year old but won in Rome last time out in a very quick 56.1 seconds but The Conqueror seventeen wins in twenty five starts with no less than nine of these listed or group races will take all the beating. He should win this then show his talents off in France before a career at stud.If The Conqueror wins he will be the first horse since Late Parade(Astronef-Skisette(Malinowski) to win three Gran Premio Citta Di Napoli. In the Ardoon stud Newbridge horses day the race was a group three and that fine sprinter also won two group three’s in France and finished fourth in the L’Abbaye mostly with the great Jacqueline Freda in the saddle Europe’s first female champion jockey (see short biography on site)

The Premio Soragna (9.55 pm) over nine furlongs for three year old and upwards fillies features last years One Thousand Guineas winner (Regina Elena) Granatina who however will be up against it with Endo Botti’s smart filly Dame De Coeur and Alduino’s pair Sugar Beat and Fuoriserie. Three  lightweights with a squeak are the Lisheen Stud bred Rajanna a winner over a mile here last time out and the Kenneth Purcell bred Alkes a nice two year old in 2020 who was showing better form when fifth to Larmar last time out and the Tally Ho Bred Suicide Squad a triple winner at two who on her best form would have a chance.

The Premio Ipodromi Partenopei (7pm) has only four runners but all are of black type standard. Biedermann (Medicean-Baratella) carrying the colours made famous by Nearco, Ribot and Botticelli to name just three of Dormello’s great champions will be the outsider of the quartet but the eleven time winner is  not without hope. Keep and Love (Lope De Vega-Whipcla) was a very good third in the Carlo D’Alessio over twelve furlongs and might find this a little sharp which leaves two of Italy’s best milers as the ones likely to grab the spoils. Only Time (Requinto-Young Americans) was third in the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica (G2) and previously dead heated for second with Frozen Juke in the Premio Signorino (LR) over 1800 metres. Frozen Juke (Frozen Power-Labaa) has run twelve times at a mile or less winning ten of them but its over longer distances he is a little vulnerable but here on Fabio Marchi’s home soil I take the Michael Mcglynn bred to just get the better of Only Time.

The Premio SGA is the first two year old race of the year over a mile and sees the debut of Caotico (Pounced-Miss Manouche) a half brother to the Premio Ribot winner Fulminix. The final race ( Premio Mergellina(HPC 2000m) on a really good card could see Le Seigneur De Fer (New Bay- La Dame De Fer)  gain his second win in five starts. The lightly raced Botti colt was a close up sixth in the Premio Lombardia(HPA) last time out and the Norrismount Stud colt is an improving sort who on this occasion might have too much for the Hillmann/O Callaghan bred Double West.

The highlight in Siracusa on Sunday is the Premio Tunisia(18.55) where the Premio Citta Di Siracusa winner Amadigi might return to form at the expense of Dorkhel and Dream Painter.Milan stages a quiet meeting before its break until September but a couple of beautifully bred three year olds will be interesting to note in the Premio Scuderia Calderoni. Freely is a Sea The Stars filly out of Fresnay making her a half sister to Call Me Love placed in both the Derby and Oaks and a winner of the Premio Lydia Tesio(G2).                                                          Enchanted Love is a Lope De Vega colt out of Statuesque a half sister to the German 2000 guineas winner Karpino. Both are trained by Alduino Botti and should be kept an eye on.

On Sunday in Deauville there is a big Italian interest in most of the races. The first race the Prix Yacolef(LR) features Sebastiano Guerrieri’s Royal Ashirah at 12.58.The Prix Jean Prat(G1) with Colosseo and four Irish challengers Wembly,Laws Of Indices,Thunder Moon and Battleground is at 14.50 and the Prix de Ris-Orangis(G3) with Collinsbay (16.35), which as with all the home cards will be live here.
