Latest News weekend preview oct 15-17

A dramatic Vittorio Di Capua on tuesday in Capannelle where Germany’s 2019 horse of the year Rubaiyat just got the better of Italian 2020 top rated three year old Cima Emergency with Wonnemond third and Cantocorale an excellent fourth. Bruno Grizzetti must be feeling Cima Emergency would have got the better of his old rival if the race had taken place on Milan’s stiffer mile. The replay probably in November in the Premio Ribot. On tuesday as well San Siro got the all clear to return to racing on three of its four tracks but that means the Gran Premio del Jockey club over a mile and a half will be run in Capannelle on October 24 along with the Gran Criterium and Premio Dormello.Milan will have its first meeting on Monday.
Sopran Basilea bred by Aidan Sexton and trained by Grizzetti was a good winner of the Premio Verziere(G3) from stablemate Cima Star with Oaks winner Eulaila only sixth after a long absence. All three will meet again on Rome’s champions day in the Lydia Tesio.I would say Fabio Branca (back from suspension) will be back in the saddle of the Sea The Stars filly as Gerard Mosse was the subject of criticism for his performance.
Sopran Basilea (Night of Thunder-Kathy Best) was a worthy winner beautifully handled by Carlo Fiocchi. After winning the principle Oaks trial the Mario Incisa della Rocchetta she finished fourth in the Oaks.Grizzetti as is his wont sharpened her up in a mile conditions race in September.Unraced at two she will be a serious Lydia Tesio candidate and its great to see Signor Ciampoli with another big winner as he is a huge supporter of Irish breeding.

The 1200 metre Premio Ubaldo Pandolfi (LR €38500) for two year old fillies is a very competitive race. Amazingly all nine runners are bred in Ireland three of them in Summerhill Co Meath by different members of the Lyons family so influential in the GAA. I wonder has this happened before its certainly a rare occurrence and great credit to all involved. This is a wide open contest where its hard to discount any of the runners in a year in which so far the Italian juvenile fillies with the exception of Island of Love haven’t inspired.

Favourite is likely to be Sebastiano Guerrieri’s Royal Ashirah bred by Michael Downey who after winning on her debut won the Alessandro Perrone (LR) by a length from the Collegelands stud bred Lollipop Girl. She then went to France where she was third in Deauville behind the Queen Mary(G2)runner up Twilight Gleaming with Papa Don’t Preach fourth. The latter was subsequently fourth in the Flying Childers(G2).

Lollipop Girl went on to win the Vittorio Crespi(LR) before finishing fifth in the best race of the season so far the Primo Passi (G3) behind Windstormblack and Baghed with Mamma Ines fourth. Off the track for almost three months she occupied the same place this time a lot closer in the Premio Eupili(LR) with Transylvania (Patrick Headon) third and Filly Of Malta((Oghill House Stud) fourth.

Elzamina (Helen and Mick Lyons) has improved on each of her four runs culminating in the Premio Grey Ghost over course and distance winning from Shemoon,Transylania,Sofy Bell and Mamma Ines. The dark horse in the field will be Sopran Marjorie (Joanne Lyons) a Profitable filly out of a Frozen Power mare a narrow winner on her debut but the booking of Antonio Fresu by the inform Grizzetti suggests substantial improvement is expected. Watch it here fourth race in Rome 14.35 Sunday.

The concluding race in Rome will be the Premio Cancelli(HPA) also over 1200 metres one of the big sprint handicaps of the year.As you would expect a wide open affair although top weight Wannacry(Footstepsinthesand) trained by Endo Botti and ridden by Antonio Fresu fourth in the Tudini and in September winner of the Premio Dentz from Virgin Isla and Altalune( Elzaam Bred by Denis Noonan) who is now four kilos better off for just over three lengths.
Grizzetti is double handed with Ipompierdiviggiu and Travelling Well (Dragon Pulse National Stud).Other Irish breds with a shout include Miss Rouge (Dream Ahead Cooneen Stud),Centuron (Gutaifan Kitty Fitzpatrick and Katie Mcgivern half brother to Master Matt who won the Aberguan Stakes) and Bloody Love (Rockhart trading)

Lots of racing all weekend on saturday at Pisa,Varese and Siracusa and on Sunday as well Rome we have Merano for NH and of course the return of San Siro on monday with three two year old races.
