For those of you who read our ratings of Italy’s best juvenile colts you will know that in our opinion the 2021 two year old fillies were not a vintage crop. That isn’t to say that there are not promising females, there are but less than in 2020. Apparently the best by far is a filly by Highland Reel who did not see a racecourse until the Third of October when she made an inpressive debut at Rome over a mile comfortably getting the better of Endo Botti’s Swipe Up (Holy Roman Emperor bred by Knockenduff Stud Tramore) with Insomma a distant third and the rest in the next parish. Insomma went on to win her maiden and then the Premio Goldoni(HPC). The runner up Swipe Up went on win a good maiden which suggests the George Kent bred filly has a promising future. However Atamisque next run a mere three weeks later was easily the best by an Italian filly in 2021 when she demolished the field in the Premio Dormello( G2 1600m). Mario Sanna had only to give Alduino Botti’s filly one smack of the whip and she simply flew home three and a half lenghts ahead of the French filly Jacinda with Terra Del Sole third and Queen Rouge fourth. Atamisque from the great globetrotters first crop is out of Aury Touch herself the winner of the Tadolina(LR 1600m) and the Buontalenta(LR 2000m) which surely gives her possibilities for both the Regina Elena and the Oaks D’Italia. If Atamisque still a little green in the Dormello winters well she promises to be a very exciting filly. Jacinda had been a dual winner in France before being a six length second to Some Respect in the Criterium Varesino(LR) followed by being a close third in the Grand Criterium De Bordeaux(LR). Therefore a far more experienced filly than Atamisque or the third Terra Del Sole (Footstepsinthesand-Valen bred by Matty and Helen Smith’s Cloneymore Farm in Athboy).Terra Del Sole had been a good winner on her debut followed up being a decent third in the Premio Coolmore behind Queen Rouge before improving again in the Dormello to now finish ahead of the Guerrieri/Cascione trained filly.
Prichi is second favourite at this stage for the Regina Elena (1000 guineas) and the Oaks D’Italia. Bred by Austin Curran in Dungarvan the daugther of Awtaad-Naseej won on her debut on October 21 and followed up in the Criterium Femminile (LR 1500m) in mid November. The granddam Sortita is a sister to two German Derby winners as well as an Oaks victor so stamina should not be a problem in the San Siro race. Prichi is very well thought of by Endo Botti and Cristina Brivio as is Purciaretta (Cotai Glory – Sharqawiyah bred by Paddy Burns of Glacken View Stud in Bunclody).Purciaretta has won four of her seven starts including the last three in which her best performance came in the Premio Divino Amore (LR 1000m) where she blew away the opposition. Another filly who will have Regina Elena ambitions is Sa Filonzana (El Kabeir – Solar Fire bred by Natalie Cleary Wexford).Winner of her last four starts including the Criterium Femminile di Tagliacozzo on the sand, the Criterium Sardo back in Sassari and finally deadheatibg in the Premio Repubblica Marinare(LR) in the process becoming the first Sardinian trained filly to win a black type race on the mainland. Antonio Cottu and the owners will begin her three year old campaign in France with Simone Brogi where she will hope to win some rich prizes before Rome.
Royal Ashirah (Hot Streak-Royal Visit bred by Michael Downey and Peter Kavanagh) was the quickest first season filly in Italy in 2021 winning the Alessandro Perrone over 1100 metres in May after an easy debut win and the Ubaldo Pandolfi over 1200 metres in October. In between the Roman team of Guerrieri/Cascione sent her to France to contest two listed races being placed in both. The latter race the Prix De la Valle D’Auge saw her finish third behind Wesley Ward’s Twilight Gleaming (Pier House Stud RPR 110) who had been runner up in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and who went on to win the Breeders Cup Juvenile sprint. Four lengths back in fourth was Papa Dont Preach (Tally Ho RPR 105) who went to win at Wolverhampton and finish a length fourth in the Flying Childers(G2). The Downey/Kavanagh bred filly with luck can turn into a high class sprinter something that also could apply to Lollipop Girl (Dandy Man-Kristal Kenia bred by Claire Eglington in Summerhill) runner up in the Perrone before herself winning the Premio Mario e Vittorio Crespi over 1200 metres. The Meath bred filly who had won well on her debut, after the Crespi ran in the Primo Passi where she had no answer to the unstoppable Windstormblack. The Dandy Man youngster never recovered her early season form after that and perhaps needs a firm sod to show her best form. Amazingly the Lyons family in Summerhill have bred three high quality juvenile fillies in Italy in 2021.Ciara breeder of Lollipop Girl is married to Austin whilst Joanne daughter of Paraic and Louise bred Sopran Marjorie (Profitable-Miss Moody) winner in Varese and close in two listed contests including the Ubaldo Pandolfi where the Mick and Helen bred Elzamina (Elzaam-Aqtaar) was less than half a length third behind Royal Ashirah, so good form. Giuseppe Di Chio Elzamina’s trainer has high hopes for the filly. The three Lyons men are of course legends of Summerhill and Meath football but on the breeding side of things the Ladies are leading the way. Summerhill and Italian racing has another connection in Michael Mcglynn originally from Westmeath but now resident in the Meath village and breeder of Frozen Juke one of the leading milers in the country over the past two years.

So as you can see on average ten pounds lower than the colts but remember we have seen very few of the 2019 Grizzetti fillies in action yet. The Mediterraneo on Saturday staged an excellent meeting where the Coppa Di Oro (HPB 2300m) produced a shock winner in the Frankel gelding Light Enters ridden by Federico Bossa who is a great asset in these big handicaps. Alessio Satta on bottom weight Under Secret must have thought he had the race won but Bossa produced the Scuderia Cuschieri horse to pounce on the line. Third was the Francesco Faraci winner Neileta. None of the fancied runners threatened to win at any stage as the bottom weights dominated as they did in the Premio Sicilia (HPC 1500m 3yo) where the Deer Forest Stud Newbridge bred Cioe (Anjaal – Rekindled Cross) with veteran Marcello Belli on board got the better of Lord Liberty and Scivolascivola. Carrying only 53 kgs he was in receipt of almost a stone from the runner up and eighteen pounds from the Prospect stables bred top weight whose late run on this occasion wasn’t quite good enough. Lucrezio made a promising debut in Pisa on Sunday and the son of Pounced and the group 3 winner Licio is certainly one to keep an eye on.
Racing this week is at Varese on Wednesday,Rome on Friday,Siracusa on Saturday and Pisa and Naples on Sunday. We will preview the weekend racing on Friday with the highlight being Pisa’s second biggest jump meeting of the year. Varese’s return will see the first of Grizzetti Galoppo’s runners in 2022 and a very good handicap the Premio Azio 4yo + over 2150 metres on the sand € 19,800. Top weight will be carried by Grizzly’s Dottor Zivago (Animal Kingdom -Taseel) who had not won until October 13 2021 but who went on to win four in the next two months. The rapidly improving half brother to the G3 winner Sefri is set a dificult task with 62.5 kgs. Federico Bossa is on Grizzetti’s other runner Gartoria and Dario Di Tocco will be well fancied on Temugin for Valentina Oglialoro. The Gerry Burke bred Denaar (Acclamation – Clever Millie) twice a course winner cannot be ruled out.The Emoli Premoli trained seven year old who has won seven races in Britain France and Italy will have Sara Del Fabbro in the saddle.
