Galoppo at night weekend review July 16-17

The first real weekend of crowd attended Summer meetings after almost three years, took place all across Italy over the past few days.Livorno spiritual home of Tuscan summer racing featured the Premio Livorno (HPB 1500m) on Sunday. Ranger In Paradise (Holy Roman Emperor- Mooney Ridge) got a beautiful ride from Salvatore Sulas to just get up on the line to win from Folki with Celtico Arcano third and Canticchiando fourth. Alduino Botti’s five year old is far from an easy ride but Sulas timed his run on the outside to perfection. From the Holy Moon family his dam is a sister to seven black type winners (perhaps Waterville will make it eight) including four Oaks heroines. Ranger In Paradise seems to be getting better with age and perhaps he can join his brothers Mooney Love and Troublemaker as a black type winner before the end of the season.

Lord Grey(Markaz- Lille Ida) was an eleven length winner of a seller over 1950 metres on Sunday last. The Paul Monaghan bred stepped up in class in the Premio Terrazza Mascagni over the same course and distance but the result was the same an effortless win for the Devis Grilli yard. The official distance was five and a quarter lengths to the runner up Xenobio trained by Marco Gasparini. The dam Lille Ida by Hawk Wing is a sister to the Flying Childers(G2) winner Sand Vixen herself dam of the group 1 winner Dream Castle. The Markaz three year old only joined Grilli in the spring and has now won two of his three starts and on this form greater prizes await. Grilli is well on his way to his best season ever with an excellent 19% strike rate.

At the Mediterraneo in Siracusa on Saturday evening the Carmelo Zapulla trained Miss Breath produced a lovely turn of foot to win the featured Criterium D’Estate over 1400 metres. The daughter of Bated Breath and Miss Mirabeau was bred by Derek Iceton of Tara Stud and is now three from three and the best two year old seen so far in Sicily. The dam by Oasis Dream is a sister to five winners including the Ebor winner Mayenne Corniche. Miss Chaumier another sister a maiden, is the dam of Lord Bay winner of the Premio Pisa. Miss Breath has nothing left to prove at Siracusa and I imagine Zapulla will try her in listed company at Capannelle in September.
Dream My Love(Zebedee bred by Jacqueline Donnelly) got her second win in the fifth over 1500 metres while Alfie Solomons (Acclamation bred by Rathbarry stud) won the opener over 1200 metres.

At Varese Kinkawa was a good winner of the Premio Gianclemente Terzaghi over 1500 metres for two year olds and in the process gave yet another boost to the Talentuosa form. By Camacho out of Myth a sister to the Prix Allez France(G3) winner Daksha Kinkawa was no match for Sebastiano Guerrieri’s filly in the Premio Boffalora.
Bruno Grizzetti completed a double at his local track with the four year old Anjaal gelding Sopran Tucano (bred by A.R Byrne) in the second over a mile. Sopran Tucano is a half brother to the great Electrocutionist winner of the Gran Premio Di Milano(G1) and the Juddmonte(G1) for Valfredo Valiani.
Another horse completing a double at Le Bettole was Sense Of Wonder (bred by Elizabeth and Peter Jones) in the 2300 metre Premio Pier Vittorio Zaini.

Another Irish bred juvenile winner was El NiƱo Bendecito (Gutaifan bred by Liam Elvidge and F.Prendergast) at Tagliacozzo. Riccardo Cangiano’s horses are in top form and Samuele Diana comfortably steered the colt home on his third start. The Tony Doyle bred Assalto won the concluding event and the Mattock stud bred Pantalica won the Premio Pescara over the minimum distance.

At Merano the featured Premio Alpha Two chase was won convincingly by the Polish challenger Ocean Life who gave six kilos to the runner up Callistemon and ten to the third placed Thisleton.
Scuderia Aichner won the other steeplechase on the card the Premio Jean D’Amour with the seven year old Andoins.
The Ilaria Saggiorno trained Chappy Bros won the 3000 metre hurdle. The son of High Chapparal was winning his tenth race and his first in 2022

The great stallion Kitten’s Joy passed away at the weekend. On the international stage he produced numerous top class animals such as Roaring Lion,Tarreef and Kameko. In Italy too the son of El Prado had many high quality horses almost all associated with the Roman stable of Gianluca Bietolini. The Ramsay family and Bietolini enjoy a close association and the likes of Steaming Kitten (Premio delle Giubileo G3),Kitten On The Run (Criterium Di Pisa(LR) and Shirleys Kitten were high class offspring of Kitten’s Joy in Italy. However the Ramsay families stallion best produce in Italy was without doubt Real Solution whom Bietolini saddled to win the Botticelli by five lengths in 2012.Real Solution started 2/5 in the Derby Italiano with Frankie Dettori in the saddle but on the day he failed to fire finishing sixth of eleven behind Feuerblitz. However Real Solution would prove his worth later winning both the Arlington Million(G1) and the Manhatten Stakes (G1).

Racing this week is at Corridonia on Thursday,Follonica and Naples on Friday,Sassari and Varese featuring the Premio Novella(HPC) on Saturday with Livorno,Merano with an excellent mixed card and Tagliacozzo with the Citta Di Tagliacozzo on Sunday.
