Before we look ahead at a busy weekend in Italy we will have a quick look back at midweek where on Wednesday in Milan we enjoyed some of the important trials ahead of San Siro’s big Sunday of National Hunt on May 1 with two group 1, two group 2 and a group 3 over the ‘Ostacoli’.The only pity in my opinion is that it all happens on the same day as the guineas in Rome.Surely the authorities, now that covid has eased somewhat could have avoided such a clash.
The great Tirolian trainer Paolo Favero has not made the best start to 2022 but returned to form with a double on Wednesday first with the Rathasker stud bred Berkshire Phoenix in the Premio Dei Novizi (3yo h 3200m) and in the Giacomo Durini steeplechase with stable star Big City. Berkshire Phoenix only having his second start over hurdles and in Italy was very impressive and wont be without a chance in the Group 2 Premio Giulio Berlingieri for juvenile hurdlers.
Big City a son of Zoffany and the Sea The Stars mare Anipa a winner on the flat for Godolfin before joining Favero has long been a talking horse and whilst winning three times over the smaller obstacles it seems chasing is his game.Last time out he had won the listed Premio UNIRE over 3500 metres at Treviso before stepping up in trip here.Laldann the 2021 UNIRE winner would provide stiff opposition as one by one the rest of the field were put in their place but eventually the Scuderia Aichner seven year old also had to yield to Big City.No doubt both will meet again in the Grande Steeplechase Di Merano (G1 4000 metres) on May 1.
The Polish/Czech challenger Ocean Life afer a seven month break returned as good as ever in the Premio Pirelli four year old hurdle.Gregorz Wroblewski’s Polish bred was runner up in the 3yo juvenile championship the Gran Criterium D’Autunno in Merano last September and was too good for the Aichner/Vana French import Ches Demonmirail with the Czech Dionis third and Favero’s Attlee fourth.Ocean Life will take a bit of beating in the G2 Corsa Siepi dei 4 Anni.By the way for anyone interested in Polish racing there is an excellent site www.trafnews.pl that is well worth a look.
Today at Capannelle the first two year old races of the season. The opening Premio Amur was won in most impressive style by the Guerrieri/Cascione team’s Miobello a full brother to the Coolmore(LR) winner Queen Rouge.By the 2011 Premio Citta Di Napoli winner Samysilver out of the Dutch Art mare Pearly Queen Miobello will surely win some more races. The Premio Romolo e Remo saw a good battle between Guerrieri’s Hurricane Black and Agostino Affe’s Quentin where the former prevailed by a head in 57.9 seconds.Hurricane Black(Brazen Beau – Ambrix) bred by Michael Rogers and Conor Noone, was sold for 30,000 guineas at Goffs UK August sale. The runner up by Adaay standing at Allevamento di Besnate who had a group 3 winner at the Curragh last weekend.
The Premio Shergar(1100m €23,100)handicap was won by the fast improving four year old Thunderblack ridden by Tore Sulas. The Massimiliano Narduzzi trained horse destroyed the big field and is a sprinter on the up.By Black Mambazo a dual Citta Di Napoli winner out of Magritte herself the winner of the Primi Passi(G3) he is certainly bred for the job.
Derby hopefuls continue to get their chance at San Siro on Sunday.Que Tempesta dwelt badly at the stalls before recovering to be a close second behind Cime Tempestose in the Premio Sirmione.Alduino Botti runs two Arc On Fire fifth behind derby favourite Tempesti on his reappearance and Arkadius a winner of his only start and like Tempesti a son of Albert Dock.Bruno Grizzetti runs another son of the Deep Impact stallion, Tramaglino who made an impressive debut over course and distance in March.
At Rome on Monday two super competitive handicap principales. The Mario Perretti(HPB 2000 m 3+f) is as one would expect difficult to call but the Irish Thoroughbred capital bred Brisighella,Incantatrice (Tally Ho) Alma Hera (Irish National Stud) Chipie D’Irlande (Ringfort)all have chances.
Perhaps even more competitive is the Premio Cloridano (HPC 1200m) but the Irish National Stud bred La Cortigiana,Beautiful Mistakes,Cosentina (bred by Allo Bobaker) Mamamareah (Tally Ho) and the Mick and Helen Lyons bred Elzamina will be there or thereabouts. Congratulations to Mick and Helen who along with Frozen Jukes breeder Michael Mcglynn together bred the very impressive juvenile winner at Newmarket Tajalla.
At the Mediterraneo in Siracusa on Monday the feature will be the Criterium Aretuseo (HPC 3 2000m).Top weight Scivolascivola bred by Prospect stables was the best two year old in Sicily last season but has not shown that form this year so far.Hellmost, Not By Chance (bred by R Wellesly) and Glory Of Road (bred by T & O Reality) are my three against the field.
