Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa and Weekend Preview

Italy’s best January racing continues on the beautiful Mediterranean island with the highlights this weekend, two traditional Handicap Principale’s.The Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa (HPB 2300m) will feature the principles from the islands premier middle distance race the GP Francesco Faraci on December 8. The winner that day was Neileta bred by J Russell in Britain a half length in front of the gambled on Va Tutto Bene with the Mattock stud Mision Accomplise a neck further back third. The favourite Immortal Romance bred by Tally Ho was fifth three 3 lengths of the winner. Va Tutto Bene bred by Sean Murphy has since won the Premio Lamborhini whilst Mision Accomplise flopped in the Gaetano Francicanava over 2100 metres where Immortal Romance and Relativity were among four who fought out a tremendous finish. A literal reading of the Francesco Faraci would make one plump for Mission Accomplise especially with Pasquale Borelli in the saddle but for consistency one would have to favour Immortal Romance or Va Tutto Bene. Watch it here 15.05 on Saturday.
If anything the Premio Sicilia (HPC 1500m) is an even trickier contest.Fourteen three year olds just out of juvenile racing line up with three key races to examine.Sicily’s richest two year old race the Criterium Dell Immacolata over course and distance was won by the Prospect Stables bred Scivolascivola (Zoffany – Might Be Lucky). The Luciano La Strina trained colt looked the best on the island and potentially even better over a longer trip. However in the Criterium D’Inverno over 2000 metres on St.Stephens Day Lord Liberty third in the Immacolata was a good winner from Not By Chance and Zia Polly with the Zoffany colt a disappointing sixth just behind the Moygaddy Stud bred Star Alpha (Coulsty) a good winner himself over 1800 metres in December. Re Luck (Luck Of The Kitten) had appeared a candidate early in 2021 to be the islands top two year old but he disappointed in the big autumn races but on January 6th in the Premio Mercedes Michele Aparo booked Pasquale Borelli to ride and he looked an entirely different animal destroying the field over 1200 metres. Perhaps that is his best trip so even with 61 kilos Scivolascivola is taken to return to form over his trip but dont rule out Re Luck,Lord Liberty,Star Alpha or Zia Polly in an absorbing contest. Off is 16.05 Saturday.
On Sunday Alduino Botti runs some interestingly bred three year olds in both Pisa and Naples some of whom may end up having classic pretensions. Lucrezio(Pounced-Licio) makes his debut in the 1500 metre Premio Otello Benedetti alongside Batboy (Bated Breath – Frigid) The formers dam was a group 3 winner over ten furlongs who finished fourth in the Oaks D’Italia whilst Frigid is a sister to a group 2 and listed winner. In Naples Caron Dimonio a brother to Carobbio and son of the Dormello winner Cassino De Pomm will finally have to deliver on the promise he has shown when runner up to both Some Respect and Tempesti. Botti’s just turned four year old Please Exceed (Outstrip – Menesttem) won his sixth race today in Rome in the Premio Red Lord over 1400 metres. The grey was bred by Sean O Sullivan in Cork and is quite possibly the best miler running on the All weather a surface he loves, five starts three wins and two places. In early April last year after winning the Premio Doria he looked a potential Parioli contender but subsequently was disappointing until his All Weather career began with a win over 1600 metres in October followed by another good win in December before today’s stroll in the Capannelle sunshine as he had only to be shaken up to win from Puerto Princesa and Doctor Strange both dual winners.

At San Rossore’s National Hunt meeting yesterday Raffaele Romano’s Fast Company four year old Callistemon had his first win over fences in the Premio Corinto over 3500 metres. As a two year old he had made a winning debut over six furlongs and at three was a very promising winner on his hurdling debut. Unfortunately despite all the promise he has flattered to deceive, but perhaps he may have found his forte as he never put a foot wrong here.
