What a couple of weeks it has been for breeders in the Midlands county with Tally Ho stud Mullingar braking all records at the Craven breeze up followed by Mondays Irish National winners sire, Golden Lariat standing at the Carey family owned Tullaghansleek Stud in Castletown Geoghegan. Not to be outdone at Milan Littlejohn bloodstock Mullingar bred Lagomago (Belardo-Navette) an impressive winner of the 1600 metre Premio Del Scuderie while in the preceding Premio Grabiasca over 2500 metres Tally Ho’s Sopran Pechino (Galileo Gold -Green Oasis) just got the better of Zain Master bred by North Westmeath businessman Pat Beirne. Both winners are trained by Grizetti Galoppo and ridden by Antonio Fresu. Lagomago was a talented but wayward juvenile but at three is a much more mature colt capable of going on to better things.Navette his dam an unraced daughter of Invincibile Spirit is a half sister to Real World (Dark Angel) multiple group race winner in 2021 including the Prix Daniel Wildenstein(G2) and also the Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain.John Little of Ennell Lodge stud tells me Navette is now in foal to Dark Angel so great expectations there. Bruno Grizzetti’s horses are now hitting top form and no doubt the Varese based trainer will have ambitious plans for Lagomago.
Speaking of three year old milers perhaps the most impressive winner this weekend was Dormello – Olgiata’s son of Night of Thunder, Breughel in the Premio Sarnico. The half brother to the 2020 Premio Pisa winner Badram might just have earned himself a run in the Parioli(2000 guineas). Unraced at two the Riccardo Santini trained colt made a winning debut over 1600 metres at Pisa before being tried at 1800 metres when third to Cime Tempestose. On Sunday back to 1600 metres at San Siro he had too much for the Botti pair of Ira Degli Dei and Musicante.Breughel might join Alsini in the Parioli in those famous Ribot and Nearco colours.
Another promising Night Of Thunder colt Vicololavandai out of the Dutch Art mare Arte Volante won the Premio Scuderia Aurora over 1400 metres from Botti’s much more experienced Sunny Gold.He is a half brother to last years Parioli placed Wopart.Still very green Vicololavandai could be anything. It will be interesting to watch Bruno Grizzetti place his three year old milers.
Alduino Botti had better luck with Oaks and Derby outsiders. Maria Salvador hitherto a little disappointing in three runs but when stepped up in trip here simply destroyed the field in the Premio Maslogarth (2000m).By Pounced out of Mandadrera a sister to the Criterium Varesino winner Mantissa herself dam of the German Oaks runner up Megera.
Arc on Fire ( Ravens Pass -Fadiganoo) was a comfortable winner of the Premio Pessano from the once again slow starting Que Tempesta with a slightly disappointing Tramaglino third.Arc On Fire is closely related to several Bottiano middle distance black type winners including Fambrus and Faciascura. He probably earned himself a run in the Filiberto in a few weeks.
At Capanelle, EC racing won both handicap principales the Mario Paretti (HPB) for three year old and older fillies over 2000 metres with Lady Argento by Australia out of the Regina Elena runner up Cronsa.Slow to mature Endo Botti and Cristina Brivio’s mare was only having her tenth run but is one that has black type potential.Chipie D’Irlande bred by Ringfort Stud ran very well in third.
The Premio Cloridano (HPC) over 1200 metres saw a tremendous battle between two EC racings contenders both second season fillies with the locally bred Bluma a head too good for Beautiful Mistakes.
At Siracusa the Criterium Artuseo (HPC) was won by the King of the lightweights Federico Bossa on Vincenzo Caruso’s Charming Thought colt Plutone who had half a length to spare on his stablemate Secret My Love a Fast Company bred by Ollie Geraghty.
Racing this week is at Milan on Wednesday,Rome on Friday,Chilivani and Milan on Saturday with Rome and Milan on Sunday. Florence and Siracusa will entertain us on Monday. Highlighs will be the first big test for the top sprinters on Saturday The Premio Certosa (Lr €39,600),one of the two big derby trials the Botticelli (LR€38,500) in Rome on Sunday and on Monday the great day of Florentine racing featuring the 195th Corsa Dell Arno (HPA 2200m ,€45,100) the oldest thoroughbred race in the World outside of England.
