Weekend Review two weeks to Derby

Muhaarar was a spectacular sprinter and he seems to have produced a colt who can challenge for top sprint honours in Ghepardo Da Toni who got the better of a tough struggle with The Kings Horses in Sunday’s Premio San Giorgio at San Siro.Cristina Signorelli’s stable star was giving the runner up four kilos and completed a four in a row as preparation for for the Premio Tudini on Derby Day.
The Premio Lodi Vecchio is the last recognized trial for the Blue Riband race of Italian racing but this years winner the mercurial Que Tempesta wont be at Capannelle on May 22 as he has been gelded. Winner of three of his five races he probably would still be unbeaten but for completely missing the break on his first two runs of the year recovering well on each occasion to be runner up.The break was good this time but Alessio Satta had a dificult time on the Mount Coote bred son of Territories who had a lenght to spare on Estoril at the line with Age Of Ultron a similar distance back in third. At this stage the principle Derby candidates seem to be the Dormello colt Tempesti winner of the Botticelli from Frozen Day, the Filiberto winner from Germany Pirouz and the runner up Tramaglino who might be joined from Grizzetti Galoppo by Chelsea Gardens sixth in the Parioli. Other challengers from abroad may appear in the next week but we will keep you up to date.
The Oaks trial the Premio Mario Coccia was won by EC Racings Resana who completed a four timer having two a half lengths to spare on Maria Salvador who was a nose ahead of Nyx’s Impact. Carlo Fiocchi had to rouse the War Command filly a full half a mile out but she responded well and outstayed the rest which is surprising as her dam the ultra tough Redona won all of her fourteen victories between 1400 and 1600 metres. On the same card at Capannelle Little Wise Girl (Dargon Pulse – Pushingmypatience) bred by DJ Laverty was a comfortable winner of the juvenile Premio Levmoss over 1200 metres. Vincenzo Fazio’s fillies dam is a sister to Mindyourownbusiness an eight time winner who was rated 117 RPR. Bruno Grizzetti’s Sopran Teodora also bred by Mount Coote Stud was a good winner of the 1800 metre Premio Scuderia Rencati at San Siro on Saturday. The Territories filly is out of Toi Et Moi a dual listed winner and a sister to the Oaks D’Italia runner up Moi Non Plus. Sopran Teodora didnt see a racetrack until April and then was eight behind Swipe Up in last Sunday’s Regina Elena so potentially lots of improvement is possible.

Merano opened its Spring/Summer jumping campaign with the traditional Premio Conde over 3000 metres the highlight. O Juke three years off the track proved once again that class never wanes when comfortably disposing of Zio Reginaldo. The Jukeboz Jury gelding was the winner of the 2018 St Leger Italiano.
Racing this week is at Rome on Tuesday,Milan and Tagliacozzo on Wednesday, Florence on Thursday,Rome and Chilivani on Friday, Milan and Siracusa on Saturday with Milan,Merano and Rome on Sunday with the highlights being in Capannelle on Sunday the Premio Tadolina(LR) and the Premio WWF(HPA) and at Merano the Premio Primi Siepi for juvenile hurdlers.
