Weekend review Frankel’s Son and Rooster shine

The Gran Premio Citta Di Napoli(HPA 1000m) developed into a battle between two sprinters trained by the locally based Barbara Matrullo and Elisa Castelli on a rare Southern raid. Mario Sanna once again showing his worth got the Showcasing gelding Rooster home a neck ahead of Hedhehog a ten time course and distance winner with Django third and Live On Stage fourth. Rooster bred by Fittocks Stud is a sprinter who is clearly on the upgrade but who needs fast ground to be seen at his best. No doubt the late withdrawls of the top two Collinsbay and Raifan made life easier for the protagonists but Castelli’s four year old looks like a horse with a future. The dam Slatey Hen a three time winner over five and six furlongs is a sister to the Norfolk Stakes winner Masta Plasta who also won the Rockinghams at the Curragh from Le Cadre Noir who stands at Aidan Sextons Sweep Lane Stud.

Sanna was also seen to good effect on team Botti’s Alma Hera (Dragon Pulse) in the Premio Soragna(HPB 1800m) where she just got the better of top weight and stablemate Happiness Therapy. The Irish National Stud bred filly is a full sister to Travelling Well(2017) a five time winner including the Premio Chiumvi at Capannelle this year and a half sister to the eight time winner Captain Cirdan. The latter won the Criterium Di Pisa(LR) and the Premio Goldoni(HPB).

The most impressive performance of the day however was by the Hitherto disappointing son of Frankel,Vento Di Passioni who simply cruised to victory in the Premio Mergellina(HPC) over 2000 metres.Team Botti’s four year old put in a much improved performance under Dario Vargiu which was easily his best effort for over a year.Beautifully bred out of a full sister to the Irish 1000 guineas winner Just The Judge perhaps he may finallly realise some of his potential.

At Siracusa the featured Premio Nastro D’Oro Di Sicilia(HPC 2100m) was won by the Robert Ng bred,Scuderia Cuschieri owned Canoeing. The five year old son of Le Havre was two lengths too good for Axcelerator with the Tally Ho bred Prisioner Of Love third.
The Mountarmstrong bred Uncle Wood (Kodiac) just got home in the Premio Rucola over 1100 metres while the WT Whittle bred Charlie’s Jamboree (Twilight Son)won for the seventh time in the mile Premio Bietola.

Team Botti had an important win in the Prix Roland De Chambure (Lr 2 1400m) at Deauville.Breizh Sky had been a very easy winner on his debut at Saint Cloud and he stepped up well in the hands of Cristophe Soumillon to get the better of the Kingsman colt Terrestrial. Alessandro Botti will have bigger ambitions with the son of Pedro The Great.

Racing this week is at Varese this evening, Sassari on Wednesday, Corridonia on Thursday, Naples and Follonica on Friday with the Premio Ippodromo Partenopei over 1800 metres at Agnano the highlight.
Siracusa with the Criterium D’Estate and Varese race on Saturday while Tagliacozzo,Merano and Livorno all have cards on Sunday.
The feature will be the Premio Livorno (HPB 1500m) at the Tuscan seaside resort.
