Royal Ashirah gave Italian two year old form another boost in Deauville on Saturday when a three and a half length third to Wesley Ward’s Queen Mary stakes (G2) runner up Twilight Gleaming conceding four pounds. Once again despite facing undesirable soft ground the Hot Streak filly ran well and on a line through Lollipop Girl shows Italian form to be very competitive.
Merano on Sunday had a mixed card involving jumping, flat and two Arab races a growing feature of racing in Italy. The exciting Gangster De Coddes (2016 Secret Singer-Tosca De Coddes FR)) cruised to victory in the Premio Vincenzo Pollio (3800m) chase where he gave the runner up almost a stone and a ten length beating without ever leaving cruise control. The five year old will next target the Group 3 Premio Piero E Franco Richard over course and distance at the end of the month and on to the Gran Steeple Chases D’Italia (G2) at the end of September. The Josef Vana Junior/Scuderia Aichner team believe he is the successor to L’Estran and on his displays so far who is to doubt them. Paolo Favero’s stable has been gradually returning to form over the past month and Moved continued the trend in the 3000 metre hurdle with a convincing win from stablemate Ostrich. Moved winning here for the fifth time is a six year old bred by the Moyglare Stud (Iffraaj-Amber Romance). Originally with Simon Crisford and rode on his English debut by Antonio Fresu before being bough by the Tirolian trainer his dam is a half sister to the Irish National Stud stallion Free Eagle (Prince of Wales St G1) and Custom Cut a dual group 2 winner.
The Premio SGA a handicap principale C over 2200 metres was won by Fresu on Global Hero in a tight finish from Cross The Line. The Romantic Wave colt was winning his fourth race in 2021 who stays this trip well. Another Italian bred enjoying a fruitful year is Sonniende a good winner of the Premio Bolzano (2400 m 12fur.) Marco Amerio’s horse has built a nice partnership with Stefano Saiu and enjoyed his fifth win of the campaign here. Sonniende is developing into a decent stayer, this was the shortest trip he has won over in 2021. An interesting winner on his first race in Italy was Rock The Barzah (No Nay Never-Barzah 2018) who won the three year old maiden over 1500 metres. Formerly with Joseph O Brien for whom he had four runs and now with Elisabetta Marcialis who has returned from France. Gabriele Malune another returned exile rode the half sister to Speculative Bid who was bred by Summerhill Bloodstock who have connections with the Hyde family.
Tagliacozzo enjoyed a really good meeting on Sunday with the featured Gran Premio Citta Di Tagliacozzo (2150m) going to yet another stoutly Italian bred Black Menteur (2016 Montalegre-Biancaora) The five year old had half a length to spare on Endo Botti’s Zollikon with Mystic Alchemy third. The eight Irish breds in the race had no joy but in the two juvenile races it was a different story. The Criterium Femminile (1350m) saw an upset when the Sardinian trained and ridden Sa Filonzana (El Kabeir-Solar Fire) ran out an easy winner from the outsider of Sebastiano Guerrieri’s three runners Vendicari. Sa Filonzana Bred by Natalie Cleary in Wexford was a winner in Sassari last time out over 1500 metres and continues the good run of the Yeomanstown stallion in Italy. The Criterium Marsicano for colts over 1600 metres (1 mile) also saw a surprise when Antonio Peraino’s Keniote (Estidhkaar-Sofi’s Spirit) was a comfortable winner from Luxury and San Sberla. Keniote is a different horse on the sand as after some indifferent runs in Rome he now has won twice and been second in three runs in Corridonia and Tagliacozzo. Mattock Stud Bred the winner of the five furlong handicap Pantalica (Alhebayeb-She’s a Minx).Germano Marcelli brought the five year old mare home three quarters of a length ahead of Levie Degli Angeli for her ninth win for Giuseppe De Chio.
On Saturday in Varese in the 2300 metre fillies maiden one could note Lady Nicole on her debut running on very well in third place. Bruno Grizzetti’s filly is a daughter of Australia and Lady Dutch winner of the Vittorio Crespi at two and runner up in the Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 guineas at three). She ran very greenly but showed promise and better days could be ahead for a filly bred to the Federico Tesio method an Epsom Derby winner mated to Italian 1000 guineas form. Below are videos of Lady Nicole’s stallion and dam’s finest days.
This weeks we have a busy week as racing gradually picks up again after a hot Summer.
Tuesday will be in Varese, first race 17.05(Premio Famiglia Pastorelli good h/cap 18.40), Wednesday in Naples (First 17.40) ,Thursday in Corridonia with the Gran Citta Di Corridonia as highlight. Follonica has racing on Friday while Naples and Merano ( an excellent card) race on Saturday with three meetings on Sunday August 15 Tagliacozzo, Merano where we have listed races on the flat and over jumps along with two handicap principlale C’s. However the big news if the jockeys give the go ahead today will be the resumption of racing in Livorno after five years. The closure of the Ippodromo Caprilli was seen as a symbol of the decline of “Galoppo” in Italy so let us hope its reopening has the opposite effect. The first meeting if all goes well will see other cards take place in September and later in the Autumn. One serious problem is as the lighting system has yet to be restored to a a sufficient quality racing will have to take place in daylight hours which in the Tuscan summer has animal welfare issues. The highlight will be the the seventy sixth Coppa Del Mare a Handicap Principale B over 2250 metres a race often run near midnight and a traditional part of the Tuscan summer.
