Another wonderful weekends entertainment From Siracusa in the South to Milan in the North via Rome and Florence for Italian racing fans.We will begin with a remarkable statistic which will shock a lot of people but demonstrate to all just how important Italian racing is to the Irish thoroughbred breeding industry.Over the Weekend in Ireland eleven Irish bred horses won on the flat.In Britain a very fine eighteen Irish breds crossed the line first. However in Italy twenty Irish bred horses won up and down the peninsula at Florence,San Siro,Capannelle and the Ippodromo Mediterraneo in Sicily a truly remarkable figure.
In Rome on Sunday there was a wonderful eight race card. The Premio Signorino(LR),over nine furlongs featured the Italian champion miler of the last two years Out Of Time as clear favourite despite disappointing behind Frozen Juke in the Natale Di Roma. With Dario Vargiu on the injured list Salvatore Sulas was doing the Seamie Heffernan job both do so well. Unfortunately the Son Of Sakhees Secret ran the worst race of his life and is sadly showing that maybe he just doesn’t have his old spark. Perhaps Alduino and Stefano Botti will think of sending the champion on stud duties as he owes nobody anything, with numerous pattern and classic victories and nearly a million euro in prizemoney and Italian bred premiums
Last weekend in the Gardone(Lr) at San Siro Fabio Branca gave a masterclass in dominating a race from the front on Bjorn, this weekend he repeated the skill in Capannelle on Attimo Fuggente timing everything so well as to burn off the milers Out Of Time and Frozen Juke but not too much to play to the Derby fourth Baptism’s strengths.Try as Frozen Juke did the extra furlong caught him out once again at this level.
Attimo Fuggente in only his seventh race is beginning to show his real potential.A son of Exceed and Excel and the Mastercraftaman mare Vague Nouvelle herself a winner of the Regina Elena(1000gns) he is bred to be a star and he might just be one.The Presidente Della Reppublica looks like being some race on Derby day.
Sulas is going to be spoilt for choice on Parioli day as we said after the Premio Pisa with champion two year old Vis a Vis, Pisa winner Lord Bay and we can now add Please Exceed who won the last trial the Doria very well.On his reappearance he had been a good third in the Daumier behind Closer Look but stripped a lot fitter yesterday and was a comfortable winner. The grey was bred by Sean O Sullivan of Corrin Stud in Fermoy who raised the likes of Lilly Langtry a dual group 1 winner herself and dam of the great Minding. Please Exceed is not a flashy sort but is a proper horse who will give his all in two weeks.(In photograph above Please Exceed clear of Assalto)
The fillies trial the Premio Saccaroa was won by Chipie D’Irlande by a nose from Strawberry Souce. The winner was sent off at 35/1 and bred by the Ringfort Stud in Rhode who have had wonderful success in Italy with the likes of Harlem Shake. The race was a disaster for Bruno Grizzetti when the hot favourite Al Siq failed to enter the stalls with the subsequent consequence of owner Antonio Somma removing the horse from the stable and sending her to Roberto Biondi. The controversial Grizzetti is having a dificult season losing his two star fillies and needs a big winner to steady the ship.
The Premio Tony Bin brought Glenearn back into the Derby picture with a convincing performance despite being still very green. The son of Gleneagles won quite easily from the Tally Ho bred Prisoner of Love. Many had though Golden Dubawi had looked a real derby prospect after his recent impressive performance but the placed horses behind him certainly didn’t boost the form here finishing fifth and sixth.
There were four handicap principale’s on the card all of them very interesting. The richest of them the WWF over a mile was won by last years Premio Ribot winner Fulminix carrying 10stone 4 to an impressive win from Win the Best bred in Delvin Co.Westmeath by Sandro Garavelli. Fulminix is a tough sort who will be hard to beat in any race over a mile.
Two weeks ago in my report I mentioned that Haven Park was one of those horses whose distance was seven furlongs at a high level. In yesterdays Premio Jebel Ali over 1500 metres the Ashling Burke and Iadora Farm bred filly dominated the race throughout but just held on from Lisaert carrying Dormello’s legendary colours.Haven Park could have a terrific season if Agostino Affe can continue to find those races just under a mile. Finally in the Premio Cloridano over six furlongs we had a double for Fermoy as the Denis Noonan of Cregg Stud bred Altalune just got the better of The King Geremia. Owner Mag Racing trainer Luciano Bietolini and jockey Carlo Fiocchi were back together for a big win in Rome for the first time since Tuscan Gaze won last year’s Derby Italiano.
Of the four Irish bred winners in San Siro perhaps one for the notebook was Aristarco trained by Gianluca Vericelli and bred by the Old Carhue stud who was second to the promising Damble on his last run and won convincingly over seven furlongs yesterday.
On Saturday in Milan the Oaks trial the Premio Alberto Chantre was won by the Biondi trained filly Zelandia who led from coast to coast as the Italians like to say.The French bred daughter of Olimpic Glory and the Shirocco mare Iberica looked like she has inherited something of her grandfather’s stamina to bring up a Fermoy treble of sorts. The Aidan Sexton bred Sopran Basilea finished well without ever troubling the winner.
In Siracusa on saturday the Jim Bolger bred Dawn Approach colt Thrifty One a half brother to the Round Tower Stakes(G3)winner New Treasure was a good winner over 8.5 furlongs.
A terrific weekends racing so enjoy the replays in the results section. Racing this week is on in Chilivani on Monday,Rome on Tuesday Friday and Sunday with a good mixed card in Milan on Wednesday where they will also race on Sunday with the feature being the listed Premio Certosa over six furlongs.Florence will host meetings on Thursday and Saturday while Siracusa will also host a Saturday fixture.
