WEEKEND REVIEW APRIL 14 -18

We usually look on with jealous eyes at the weather that Italy enjoys but todays programme in Rome was completed in torrential rain while further north in Milan snow was the order of the day.Nevertheless we enjoyed an excellent weekends racing with last years champion sprinter The Conqueror the Lord and Master of all he surveyed in a hugely impressive return to action in the Premio Certosa(LR).                                                      The now six year old son of Excelebration was facing opponents who all had the benefit of at least one run this year and also was giving eight pounds and upwards to his rivals. As usual Tore Sulas mount bounced out of the stalls but the Czech challenger Ponntos took him on early, however after three furlongs it was obvious he could not stay with Alduino Botti’s star.I and others thought with two runs under his belt and an eight pound weight advantage Agiato would challenge but Bruno Grizzetti’s charge was simply ran off his feet. The Spanish champion Kitty Marion(receiving eleven pounds)ran on late to be second with the Ringfort stud bred I am Magnetic(receiving seventeen pounds) doing likewise to be third but Sulas hardly moved a muscle as The Conqueror cruised to an easy win.He will head straight for the Tudini(G3) on Derby day and after that Botti will surely send him to Ascot or France in high summer where he should get the fast ground he loves for a tilt at a Group 1 prize. If we take I Am Magnetic’s Irish rating The Conqueror should get a 113/114 rating here whilst the French Valeur system through Kitty Marion would leave him on 108/9 so either way the Excelebration horse deserves his chance with Europe’s best. After this run it looks that Agiato needs at least six furlongs.

The opener at San Siro saw five Derby hopefuls in the Premio Pessano. Grizzetti Galoppo’s Tomiz a son of Zoffany from a Montjeu mare was a comfortable winner from Reggiolo.Tomiz now two from two will probably run in the Filiberto over the same course and distance in two weeks where the opposition will be a lot tougher for the clearly talented but still green colt.

There were several good handicaps on an attractive card the best of which was the Handicap di Primavera(HPC)18,700 euro over nine furlongs. In a tremendous finish Storm Finish(Gale Forece Ten-City Vaults Girl) carrying nine stone six(60kgs)just got the better of Bull Fighter.Marco Gasparini’s colt was bred by Meadowlands Stud in County Down the property of the Kennedy family. The Dam has produced two other winners in Italy City Red Girl(Capello Sensevero) and City Of Stars(Lilbourne Lad) now eight who has thirteen wins under his belt and over 155k won.

Torch Lit won the Premio Lavandaia(14,300 euro) quite comfortably over six furlongs for the inform team of Luciano Vitabile and Silvano Mulas. The four year old son of Dansili -Stealth Missile is a half brother to Irish Legend(2018 Sea The Stars)unbeaten in two for Hugo Palmer.Stealth Missile herself is a half sister to the Irish Oaks and Prix de L’Opera winner Covert Love.Torch Lit was bred by John and Clodagh Mcstay’s Oaklawn Stud(Friarstown Co.Kildare) and Mabaki Investments.

In Capannelle on Sunday I Know Why won the Premio Bilitis a three year old handicap(13,200 euro) in impressive fashion over a Mile.Endo Botti and Christina Brivio’s Sepoy colt was bred by Mountain View Stud in Tipperary.                                                  Guzman(Camacho-Casablance Jewel)had his fifth win in the Premio Torcicollo(1800m 13,200 euro)where in receipt of thirteen pounds he kept the remarkable Change Of Moon in second place in his attempt at win number 27.                                                              Another Irish bred winner was the Rossenarra Stud bred The Full Swipe in the Premio Lomitas(1600m 7,700 euro)This was the Art Connoisseur geldings eight win.

In Siracusa on Saturday Frozen Power’s son Rightformula won the Premio Karim over six furlongs(1200 m 11,000)where he led coast to coast from the Tally Ho bred Ross Ross(Sir Prancealot-Patience a Plenty(Kodiac) and in third the Margaret Sinanan bred Nejba who both challenged late but never got near the winner who is now five from six.Antonino Canella enjoying a wonderful season in Sicily will soon send the colt to Rome or Naples for one of the big sprints.                                                                                                    Swift Approval effort at winning his twelfth race in five different countries was only denied by another Antonino Canella colt Tenzing in the Premio Heraklion(1500m 11,000 euro)The Jean Brennan bred gelding is as game and and tough as ever.

Rome on Friday had the first two year old races of the year both won by Sebasiano Guerrieri inmates.Lady Arcana(Arcano) just got the better of the Dylan Finnucane bred Coulsty filly in the fillies race while Blu Metal Jacket(Le Vie Infinite)was impressive in the colts race winning comfortably in 57.9.Another Tally Ho Bred Small Details(Kodiac-Aqueous) won on the All Weather.

San Siro on wednesday celebrated a really good mixed card with the jumps races trials for the huge meetings on April 25 and May 9. The international nature of the Italian Ostacoli scene can be gauged by the fact that the winners on the card came from the Czech Republic,Poland and Italy. Noteworthy is the dominace of local and French breds on the jumps scene. Irish breds don’t have the same impact as on the flat.Highlight steeplechase was the Premio Spegasso(two miles two furlongs for four year olds 17,600 euro)where Gatsby trained by Pavel Tuma(Czech Republic) just got the better of the Raffaele Romano trained Salcret.

Highlight on the flat was the Premio Falbrav for 4 year olds and up over ten furlongs(16,500 euro) where Silvano Mulas on Siberius got the better of the Planteur filly Agnes.

Rome has a fantastic card featuring the first two classics of the season the Parioli and Regina Elena the latest being that Telepatic Glances will run and that Pierre Charles Boudot will take the ride on Aria Importante as well as Mordimi in the Parioli. The Botticelli will be a huge trial for the Derby as with the classics will have huge Irish interest as no doubt will the Carlo Chiessa for the fast fillies.                                                                                Meanwhile in Milan jump fans will  have a grade 1 and grade 2 hurdle to enjoy as well as the main trial race for the Gran Steeplechase di Milano.
