Weekend review and Derby News

On a weekend when it appeared that it was Aidan O Brien versus Italy in Longchamp with St Marks Basilica winning the Poule D’essai des Poulains from the Gianluca Bietolini trained Colisseo and Cristian Demuro on Coeursamba depriving the Irishman the guineas double in the fillies equivalent .The two Italians will have a big say in next Sunday’s Derby in Rome with Bietolini running Alastor with Gerard Mosse in the saddle and Demuro expected to partner the possible favourite Tokyo Gold trained by Satoshi Kobayashi in France.

Let us begin with the local news.As we said on Friday the two year old season is now in full swing. Sebastiano Guerrieri has dominated the Roman scene and had yet another winner on Friday as Lady Arcana(Arcano-Jolly of Naytiri) made it two from three in the Premio Le Moss.Agostino Affe’s Fighting King a son of Bobby’s Kitten won a tight finish in the opening Premio Odola from the Deer Forest Stud bred Sofy Bell(Kodiac-Almoner).                  Aclaim had his first winner in Newmarket on Saturday and had his second less than twenty four hours later in Milan where Beautiful Black out of a Sea The Stars mare won the Enrico Barragiola.Fabio Branca gave Some Respect in third a typical tender ride and the Gleneagles colt is one to note.                                                                                      Ciara Eglington of Collegelands stud bred the Alduino Botti trained Lollipop Girl(Dandy Man-Kristal Xenia)winner of the Mimma Werner on her debut over six furlongs. Her task was made easier as Daisy Dei Grif careered violently right as she was challenging.                     Sardinia is producing better two year olds year on year best exemplified by Memo de L’Alguer finishing third in this year’s Regina Elena. In Chilivani on Friday Calamoresca a two year old daugther of Vadamos and the Kodiac mare Isontonic won the five furlong Antonio Lepori for Antonio Cottu. The Glacken View Stud, Bunclody bred filly was an easy five lengths winner with the Ballinafad stud bred Scatola Chiusa third.

Endo Botti and Cristina Brivio are masters at bringing horses on slowly.Another example of this talent is I Am What I Am now finding his best form as a five year old.The Es Que Love colt was unraced at two then won four times at three and at the end of 2020 was challenging for honours in the big sprints,  fifth in the Aloisi behind The Conqueror for me the best horse in Italy on good ground. The Peter Kelly,Emerald Bloodstock bred carried 63kgs(9 stone 12)in the Premio Haseltine in Capannelle and was an impressive winner. He could win a good sprint or two this year.                                                                          Grundy one of the great horses of the last quarter of the twentieth century usually ridden by Pat Eddery and owned by the great Carlo Vittadini has an excellent six furlong handicap named in his honour which was won by Thunderblack a three year old son of Black Mambazo-Magritte two top class Italian sprinters. The Massimiliano Nardussi trained, Tore Sulas ridden colt was a comfortable winner and is bred to win more good sprints.

The Merano Summer jumping season got under way yesterday and national hunt fans could once again visit the beautiful track in South Tirol(1000 racegoers can attend since Saturday)Raffaele Romano’s Lucechericama was an impressive winner of the Premio Cogne novice hurdle from the Polish challenger Kliff. The opening Premio Val Di Non chase saw a tremendous finish between Romano’s Mensch and Laura Marinoni’s Purple Light who won by a short head.Once again on the jumps scene a noticeable absence of Irish breeding on what is a growing market.

Derby week begins with some doubts about some runners but with more news on riding arrangements. As we said the probable favourite Tokyo Gold will be ridden by Cristain Demuro and Gerard Mosse will partner Bietolini’s Alastor.                                        Frankie Dettori will ride the Filiberto Winner Flag’s Up for Alduino Botti. Andrea Atzeni will possibly ride Vento Di Passioni while Fabio Branca will choose between Sopran Posiedone and Tomiz  with Silvano Mulas on the other.Mulas an amazing character rode five winners in Milan yesterday and is in the form of his life(look at the Palio section as he wins in Siena 2010).  Carlo Fiocchi last year’s winner will be on Rio Natal,  Dario Di Tocco will partner the Botticelli winner Tiaspettofuori, Alberto Sanna will be on Juan De Montalban for Raffaele Biondi while the two German challengers Isfahani and Quello will be ridden by Sybille Vogt and Clement Lecoruvre respectively .Salvatore Sulas will have the choice of the other Botti runners.Ralph Beckett has booked Ioritz Mendizabal for Fabilis the Frankel colt winner of two races and second to Juan De Montalban conceding seven pounds.Mendizabal of course partnered St Marks Basilica to victory in the French 2000 guineas last Sunday.

Prize money is down this year but still substantial at 634,000 euro with a superb back up card including the Premio Presidente della Repubblica(G2)181,000 Euro. The Premio Tudini(G3)over six furlongs will possibly feature The Conqueror and the Carlo D’alessio(G3) over twelve furlongs will  also be an international event. The first two year old listed the Premio Alessandro Perrone and the Premio Sbarigia will feature some of those fillies from the Regina Elena. There will be four listed events in Milan on Saturday featuring the principle Oaks trial the Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta named after Ribot’s owner.                                              A wonderful weekend to look forward to which will include a large number of Irish bred challengers for all of the races. We will be doing extra updates this week to keep you informed.
