This weekend is dominated by Trotting with the Derby and Oaks in Capannelle on Sunday. The Derby is worth 800,800 euro and the Oaks 253,000 so big money at stake. Not being afflicted by the European pattern committee but also having to suffer MIPAAF’s slow payments Trotting in the past decade has become more lucrative than flat racing a good example being with two and a half months left in the season the leading trotting trainer Alessandro Gocciadoro has winnings of 2•418 milllion compared to Alduino Botti the leading flat trainer with 1.878 million winnings and that is just in Italy.Gocciadoro has won many big prizes in France and Sweden.
The principle flat meeting will be in Capannelle on tuesday when the highlight will be the mile /1600 metres championship race the Premio Vittorio Di Capua(231,550 euro). We will do a preview on Monday.
Saturday sees racing at Florence and Siracusa and Sunday in Tagliacozzo. The Florentine card on saturday is full of interesting racing with two handicap principales. The Premio Cascine over 1700 metres concludes proceedings with the favourite Ranger In Paradise a half brother to Mooney Love by Holy Roman Emperor out of Sea Of Class’s sister Mooney Ridge.Team Botti’s colt will take beating but I think three Irish breds will give him plenty to do.City Of Stars bred by the Kennedy family in Down has been a wonderful servant for Marco Gasparini with fourteen wins and 170k already in the bag. Please Exceed bred by Sean O Sullivan was once considered a guineas hopeful but lost form but is now returning to something like his best and has Dario Vargiu in the saddle.Mr Gualano bred by Matt Duffy is an old hand at these big mile handicaps and with a nice weight of 53.5 kilos is in with a shout.Other Irish breds in the field include Skymarc Farm’s Jar Jar Binks a good winner in Rome but with a big penalty and Mesocco bred by Aidan Sexton in Kildare and bottom weight Taki Taki bred by Springwell stud in Kilmallock.
The Premio Firenze over the Derby course is equally difficult to call and is also full of Irish bred contenders. Rainmaker is likely to be favourite here for Botti and Mario Sanna with Vargiu on board the other Desert Prince colt Twice Around.Eastern Bound bred by Sunderland holdings is a serious contender. The New Bay colt won in Milan in May getting the better of Conquering Eagle bred by the Ballygallon Stud. The Lope De Vega colt is now two kilos better off but has a bad habit of always being the bridesmaid.Double West(Belardo) bred by Castledillon stud,Principe Di Toni(Zoffany) bred by P and B bloodstock in Abbeyfeale and Capotempesta (Fulbright) bred by Robert Berns all have chances.
The Premio Rocca Delle Macie for juveniles over 1800 metres sees the Robert Patterson bred Isabel Queen(Al Kazeem) among the favourites but Botti and Vargiu will take beating here with Mr Jingles(Pounced). The Premio Cosimo De Medici also for two year olds over six furlongs could see the Grizzetti trained Joseph and Adrian Reid bred Croccante(Equiano) get a win. The Premio Golfo Di Napoli also over six furlongs for juveniles in Siracusa has some interesting runners.Favourite will be Scivolascivola (Zoffany)bred by Prospect Stables runner up on his debut.Other candidates include Glory Of Road(Kodiac) bred by T and O Reality,Miss Samu (Mehmas) bred by Derek Smullen and Nikitis (Cotai Glory) bref by Morgan Cahalane.
A review of all on Monday with a preview of tuesday’s big meeting in Capannelle.
