Weekend Preview May 1-2

This weekends racing in Italy features the Group 3 Premio Ambrosiano over 10 furlongs in Milan. Also in San Siro a major derby trial the Premio Emanuele Filiberto over the same course and distance. The Premio Salselon over a mile will give us some ideas for the Carlo Vittadini in June.

In Rome on Sunday there is an Oaks trial the Premio Mario Coccia over 2100 metres whilst on Saturday between both tracks the two year old season moves into full swing with five races for juveniles.Rome also features two important sprints which will give us some tips for the Tudini on Derby day.

The Ambrosiano is a truly international race, Six from Italy, five from Germany and one from France. The home team will be led by last years Gran Premio d’Italia winner and Derby third Masterwin(Mastercraftsman-Palace of Winds  a winner in Dundalk For John Oxx) on his seasonal reappearance. He will be ridden by Nicolo Pinna who must have been watching last weekends Regina Elena with very mixed emotions. As Diego Dettori’s number one jockey in 2020 he rode Wakanaka in all of her races but was offered the job with Nicola Simondi over the winter. At the time it was a no brainer as Simondi and his partner Lucia Lupinacci appeared to be the rising stars of Italian training with the likes of Masterwin and Brasilian Man in the stable. However Racing as we know is never a very stable affair(forgive the pun)and Simondi’s principle owner Incolinx withdrew all of the horses and moved them to Roberto Biondi and Alduino Botti including the 111 rated Brasilian Man.

The five German challengers include last years Federico Tesio(G2)winner Stex(OR109),Wonnemond runner up in the Vittorio di Capua(G2 and a dual pattern winner in Germany officially rated 114.No Limit Credit also a  group 2 winner  is another Teutonic invader as is the interesting Grocer Jack fourth to Champion stakes runner up and Premio Roma winner  Skaletti  in the Prix Exbury.

The French challenger is the Aga Khan’s Shalamba a winner in St Cloud and Bordeaux and runner up in the Grand Prix du Nord at Chantilly.   Along with Masterwin the home challenge has Ornais recent winner of the Regione Toscana from Thunderman, the inform Roberto Biondi’s Azzurro Cobalto and two tough stayers Agnes and Aldrodovar.

The two highest rated horses in the race Wonnemond and Masterwin’s fitness has to be taken on trust so in a very competitive race of group two standard we give a tentative nod to Stex and Ornais to fight out the finish ahead of the the probable favourites who perhaps  have bigger prizes in mind.

The Filiberto features the Frankel colt Vento di Passione, many people’s fancy for the Derby.Sunday will tell a lot about his chances as he has to face the son of Gleneagles Glenearn an impressive winner on his most recent start and also Cantocorale fourth in the Berardelli at two and third to Glenearn when needing the run last time out.A very interesting runner is Reggiolo reputedly Endo Botti’s best colt a good second to the much talked about Tomiz on his most recent start.                            Wild Explosion a son of The Gurkha had the Botticelli winner Tiaspetofuori back in fourth when winning the Renzo Guidotti in February.Roland Dzubasz brings Karlgeorg from Germany who on his most recent start won a good conditions race in Berlin. The German colt performance will be of interest as up to now to these eyes at least the Italian three year old colts have been outshone by their female contemporaries.                               The Derby picture is still  hazy and Sunday’s race if it gets a decisive winner is likely to produce the favourite in Rome in three weeks.Vento Di Passione to win from Glenearn and Wild Explosion but  keep an eye on Karlgeorg.

Ornais stablemate from Dormello Olgiata, Badram will start favourite for the mile Premio Salselon where he will face stiff opposition from Grizzetti’s Villabate and Alduino Botti’s Ranger in Paradise(half brother to derby hopeful Mooney Love.Badram was unbeaten in three going into the 2020 Parioli where he was disappointing but the Mukhadram colt returned in the Autumn to win the Premio Pisa and ran very well on his seasonal debut when second to Frozen Juke in the Natale Di Roma.

The Premio Mario Coccia over ten a half furlongs in Rome  sees Eulaila put her unbeaten record on the line. The Arcano filly just got the better of Tigre Bianca on her three year old debut and they meet once more over the course and distance on Sunday.Tigre Bianca(Elzaam-Adeste(Dansili)was bred by Mrs P O Rourke of Belmont Stud in Wexford.Zanfogna and Alkes(bred by Kenneth Purcell are others dreaming of the Oaks.

Saturday in Capannelle is all about sprinting, with three two year old races over the minimum trip a three year old trial for the Tudini over six and the elders having their chance as well. The Premio Nikoli for the three year olds featuring Raifan,Royal Mehmas and Captain Magnum is well worth watching at 15.30 Italian Time.

It has been a truly remarkable week for Irish breeders in Italy and as we get closer to the Derby and Oaks we will continue to bring Irish breeders the information on their offspring.Remember you can continue to see all of the racing over the weekend on the site.
