Before we begin our preview of a weekend where San Siro stages an exceptional card a quick look back at a busy Republic Day at Rome and Siracusa and the news that two more leading jockeys are heading abroad. Andrea Mezzatesta 28 son of the great Vincenzo a Roman legend, most famous for being the jockey of Tisserand and an epic Derby Italiano win from Carroll House is heading to the United States. Pasquale Borelli is also heading abroad but this time to Deauville. The Neapolitan now 40 has rode over 1300 winners and is seeking new challenges.Borelli certainly left on a high winning the Premio Enzo e Tullio Mei(HPC) on Flam. Good luck to both.
Flam a son of Sakhees Secret was one of seven Italian bred winners at Capannelle on the day. At San Siro on the same day four of the six winners were also home bred. There is a discernibile improvement in the quality of stallions standing in the country which is great news for local breeders but will present a challenge for those depending on the Italian market for their sale of yearlings. Ruler Of The World, Helmet, Adaay, Markaz to name but four of the recent arrivals are all making an impact in addition to the well established Arcano, Mujahid and Pounced not to mention the exciting Albert Dock. The enthusiasm shown by breeders for Magician in 2021 has shown that there is a market in Italy for potential top class stallions.
Sebastiano Guerrieri in 2021 sold his flying juvenile Windstormblack to Hong Kong for big money. The same has occurred this year as the Rome based Sicilian has sold the Brazen Beau filly New Collection to Team Valor for an undisclosed fee. Sold for a mere 4500 guineas at Tattersalls as a yearling she won on her debut and followed up with an impressive win in the listed Premio Alessandro Perrone over 1100 metres. It is believed that at least in the short term she will stay in Italy.
San Siro stages an excellent card on Sunday. One can only imagine what the ITV hype machine would claim if they
were covering it. The coverage at Epsom today was even more hysterical and biased than usual, perhaps exacerberated by the fear that the Prix Du Jockey Club is becoming the three year old middle distance race that really matters.
Milan on Sunday promises to be an exciting day especially with the clash between two champion fillies in the 94th Premio Royal Mares(LR 1600m €38,500) Aria Importante and Telepatic Glances were two of the three juvenile fillies who lit up the 2020 season. Last year the daughter of Twilight Son continued that form with wins in the Carlo Vittadini, Nogara, Seregno and Chiusura but EC Racings filly after winning the Torricelli was off the track for almost a year. The Pride Of Dubai filly returned in March with a comfortable win but then lost her unbeaten record to Haven Park in the Premio Azzurina. Carlo Fiocchi rode a much more aggressive race in the Tadolina where Telepatic returned to something like her Premio Dormello(G2) winning form. She was ridden by Antonio Fresu on that occasion and here they renew that partnership against the filly known as the Queen of San Siro. Aria Importante has raced ten times at the Milanese track winning on nine occasions and was second in the Gran Criterium on the other. She began her four year old career with a comfortable win from the Premio Cumani(G3) winner Deadline who reopposes here on three kilos worse terms. The Antonio Marcialis French import Were is in receipt of 6.5 kilos but the biggest danger to the big two maybe the Aisling Burke bred Haven Park but I take Aria Importante to make it ten wins at San Siro.
The Premio Certosa (LR 1000m € 39,600) is a hugely competitive race where all nine runners have hopes of success. Obviously the third and fourth in the Tudini (G3) Raifan and Collinsbay will be prime contenders but two flying fillies Sphere Of Fire (bred by Noreen and Liam O Donovan) and Royal Ashirah (bred by Peter Kavanagh and Michael Downey) if on their best form will provide a threat as will the Franch challenger Wejdan and The Kings Horses who receiving three kilos from the two favouries must have a chance.A really difficult race to call but perhaps one of the second season horses might strike for the younger brigade.Royal Ashirah and The Kings Horses to fight out the finish.
The Premio Mario e Vittorio Crespi(LR €39,600) for two year old fillies has a seven strong field, all of whom are winners. French Fries a half sister to Atamisque by Exceed and Excel got the better of Royal Lea a length on her debut but was a distant third behind New Collection in the Perrone. However the fourth Royal Rachel boosted that form at Naples today. Royal Lea (Bred by Ciara Eglington) went on to win well over 1100 metres at Rome. Bruno Grizzetti will be doubly represented with Antonio Fresu on Edith Dei Grif impressive over course and distance on her only start. Another winner on her only run is Queen Serenity (Sioux Nation) bred by Corrib racing and trained by Vincenzo Fazio who like Guerrieri does not send his horses to Milan on wild goose chases. A very interesting race that is impossible to call and better to watch.
The Premio Estate (LR 1600m 3 €38,500) will see Il Grande Gatsby return to action after being third in the Parioli (2000 guineas). The Churchill colt started favourite for the classic after an impressive win in the Premio Pisa and will be expected to get compensation here. However Grizzetti Galoppo has hit top form and is doubly represented by Tramaglino unplaced in guineas and Derby and Some Respect who last time out showed a little of his top class juvenile form. Alduino Botti will have Bahja Del Sol and Sunny River but Il Grande Gatsby to win for EC Racing who also run the very interesing Arkend (Arcano) unraced at two but an impressive winner of his last two starts.
The Premio Lombardia(HPA 2400m €31,900) looks at the mercy of the Alduino/Stefano Botti team represented by Clarenzio Fan,Fambrus and the three year old Estoril. Clarenzio Fan won the famous Corsa Dell’Arno at Florence before finishing fifth in the group 3 Premio Carlo D’Alessio. He was just behind Fambrus in fourth who in 2021 was the winner of the Coppa D’Oro over 3000 metres so expect Dario Vargiu to set a strong pace.I expect the seven year old to have too much stamina for the rest.
The highlight at Merano will be the Premio Glorenza hurdle over 3300 metres where I expect Sky Constellation to get the better of Aventus.
