Four listed races in San Siro on Wednesday to look back on. Varese opens its Summer programme on Saturday and it will take Milans place in the calendar until September similar to Naples and Capannelle. The Lombardy track will open with the Premio Mario Benetti a handicap principale C as its highlight meanwhile in Siracusa on Sunday the Sicilian track has an excellent programme including the Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa (HPB) over 2300 metres. Merano after last weekends magnificent meeting has an interesting programme for jumping fans while Tagliacozzo has a really good card for aficionados in Abruzzo.
From an Irish breeding point of view the big news on Wednesday was Don Chicco’s win in the Premio Giuseppe De Montel(LR) over 1500 metres. The two year old race named after one of Italy’s great owner breeders who made such a contribution to San Siro and of course owned and bred Ortello Italy’s first winner of the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe.
The significance is that Don Chicco is the first produce of El Kabeir to win a black type race. The son of Scat Daddy is standing at Yeomanstown stud in Naas and already has three individual winners in the peninsula.Il Sindicalista the favourite missed the break, pulled himself to the front at the curve only to get completely unbalanced and fall out of contention. Gabriele Cannarella has seen the highs and lows of racing in a few days. Don Chicco was another example of the Roman trainers domination of the two year old scene even in Milan. Little O Kelly trained by Vincenzo Fazio got the better of Amalaura and a very disappointing Freccia in the Mantovani the fillies equivalent to further cement the Capital’s stranglehold. Fazio, Agostino Affe and especially Sebastiano Guerrieri have had a grip on the best two year old prizes at least up to now leaving the Botti and Grizzetti operations in the shade, but for how long? This extra competition has to be a good news story for Italian racing but on the other hand the bitter divorce between the Roveda family and Raffaele Biondi is a big blow. Juan De Montalban second in the Derby has been sold for 400,000 euro to David O Meara and Fayathaan winner of the Parioli, Elisa Again, Agnes and others have all been transferred to Gianluca Bietolini. The Lazio trainer left Italy for Maisons Laffitte in the middle of the last decade leaving Dad Luciano in charge in Rome. Luciano Bietolini trained Tuscan Gaze to the Derby Italiano in 2020 and Gianluca is making a bigger impression in France every year. In the current year Colosseo finished second in the Poule Dessai Des Poulains to St Mark’s Basilica and Alastor was third in the Derby Italiano.
The Varese season begins with the traditional Premio Mario Benetti for three year old and upwards fillies over 2250 metres. Alduino Botti saddles the top weight Lyrical and at the half way point in the year leads the trainers table with eighty winners worth 1.32 million Euro.Three horses bred in Ireland have real chances here. Moorland Spirit has been placed on her last three starts all in good company and with 55 kgs has an obvious chance. She is a daughter of Kyllachy bred by R and T Levin. Sopran Kalypso trained locally by Bruno Grizzetti and bred by the Brickfield Stud and Durcan bloodstock was fourth to Zanfogna in a very good conditions race in her last outing and with 57 kgs is also in with a shout.Cooneen Stud are the breeders of the Devis Grilli trained Scherbatsky who beat Moorland Spirit into third place in a ten furlong Milan handicap but there is a five pound turnaround. A good race in prospect the off is at 19.05 Irish time Saturday evening.
On Sunday the Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa (Handicap Principlale B over 2300 metres) is the weekends highest quality race. The two best middle distance horses in Sicily top the weights Big Rope with 63 kgs(9 stone 13) and Immortal Romance who carries a pound less The Tally Ho bred Society Rock gelding has a big chance. Another Irish bred with a chance is the beautifully bred Declaration of War (Barronstown Stud) gelding Orange Suit a half brother to Simple Verse(Champion fillies and Mares G1) and Even Song(Ribblesdale st G2) and a winner here over 2100 metres in March. The Italian bred Perego is a contender as is My Big Gift Meaghers Flag (Jim Bolger) a winner over course and distance last week is not without hope. The off 20.40 Sunday evening.Watch it with a nice Sicilian white.
Tagliacozzo is the home of Galoppo in Abruzzo in Central Italy. They stage a very nice card on Sunday evening on the Sand where one of those remarkable tough Irish bred warriors who number among them Change Of Moon (26 Wins) Pez Bernina (25 Wins ) will compete. Bentleysoysterboy at twenty two wins hasn’t quite got to the quarter century yet but has a chance to get one step closer in the Premio Associazione Mabo over 1000metes (5F) at 17.10 ,The son of Kheleyf has won twenty two times and was bred by Adelaide Foley. The Marco Morelli trained gelding is on the back of a win in Corridonia last time out. The Foley clan are having some season in Italy. Mordimi (John and Anne) did them proud in the listed Premio Estate on Wednesday when second to Cantocorale. The biggest threat to Bentley could come from the Pat Beirne bred Prince Of Braccio.
At Merano the highlight is the Premio Tempo D’Or (16.55) a two mile novice hurdle which features the Premio Cogne winner Lucechericama. He represents the Romano/Agus team. Overly Sweet was a decent performer on the flat and along with Brave Faisal could give the son of Maxios most to do.
Enjoy all the racing live here.
