Weekend Preview April 3-5

Italian fans have a terrific Easter programme to enjoy this weekend with arguably the two most important Guineas trials in San Siro on Sunday along with a most interesting Derby trial. On Monday in Capannelle another Derby trial whilst in Sicily there are two terrific Handicap Principales C  one for three year olds over a mile and another over 10.5 furlongs for the older brigade. The Sprinters are looked after with a really good Premio Shergar in Rome today over five furlongs and with a top notch conditions Saturday in Milan
.
But let us begin with the Premio Gardone(LR) over a mile on Sunday where we will see the return of last years two year old champion Vis a Vis and the only horse to have beaten him Wealth of Love.Alduino Botti’s colt won three out of four including the Gran Criterium(G2,286000 euro).By Mujahid-Annaelia he is also bred by Dioscuri one of the Botti family studs.Rated 109 eleven pounds below St.Marks Basilica Europes highest rated two year old Vis a Vis is already favourite for the Parioli but here faces his master in the Vittorio Riva over the same course as the Gran Criterium. Both races were on soft ground but Vis a Vis was hugely impressive on the biggest day whilst Michelino Bebbu’s colt bred by Anne Hayes in Kildare was a disappointing fifth. The Gardone wont be a two horse race as Botti also fields the unbeaten Morpheus colt Mordimi three from three including a good win over Bell’ Imbusto over the course and distance on Saint Patrick’s day.Two other interesting runners are Bjorn twice a winner at Florence and Milan and the Mehmas colt Fayathaan three times a winner in Wolverhampton,Kempton and Newcastle but now with Roberto Biondi.
Anything other than a Vis a Vis win will be a surprise.

The Premio Seregno(LR) for the fillies is equally interesting. The 2020 flying machine Aria Importante who was taken out of Bruno Grizzetti’s stable by his owners Blueberry(Bezzera family)because of the trainers dispute with the Milan racecourse owners. In her first four races including the Primi Passi (g3 6f)the daughter of Twilight Son was superb including two good wins over the top class Wakanaka. In the Gran Criterium over 1500 metres she was a distant second to Vis a Vis and didnt just look as effective over the longer distance.Aria will have another one hundred metres to contend with here and Havana Love a daughter of Kodiac and the Galileo mare Galmalea.Havana won the Criterium Femminile after finishing second in the G2 Dormello behind Telepatic Glances.Cima Star represents Grizzetti ,she cost 150000 guineas as a yearling and was impressive in her only start. The form got a boost when the well beaten second Sopran Basilea bred by Aidan Sexton was hugely impressive in her second outing earlier in the Week.I think Aria Importante can win but at the next level the mile will be too far.

The Premio Guido Clerici(10F) is easily the best Derby Italiano trial so far.Sopran Poseidone as we know bred by Eileen Farrelly and Dermot Murphy in Rathangan makes his seasonal bow.Its a little surprising to see the son of Gutaifan-Ms Sasha Malia so early in april as Grizzetti is on record as saying he would only have one run before the big day unless he was a little backward in preparation.Sopran was so impressive in the Campobello when he put 3 and a quarter lengths on Bell’Imbusto who reoppose’s here with a sharpner over a mile under his belt.Alduino Botti also runs two beautifully bred colts who have won their only start.Le Seigneur De Fer by Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay and the hugely interesting Australia Colt Mooney Love. His dam Mooney Ridge was a winner of two by Indian Ridge out of Holy Moon making her a half sister to Sea of Class winner of the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks and second in the Arc to Enable.Incredibly three more of her sisters are Oaks D’Italia winners and a brother a Derby Italiano runner up.On this occasion I think with the advantage of fitness Bell’Imbusto might just have the edge on Sopran Poseidone but keep an eye on Mooney Love as well.

We will have a full review of all the weekends activity on tuesday and don’t forget you can see all the cards in our racecards section and read the results and watch the races in the results/video section.Enjoy and Have a Happy Easter.
