Vargiu leans on Sulas in Pisa and Siracusa’s big day preview

Dario Vargiu was in sensational form in San Rossore on Sunday recording a treble that showed why he is the best in Italy and one of the top jockeys in the World.
The Criterium di Pisa(LR 2YO 1500m €38,500) had three leading protagionists in a tight betting market and the three colts and their jockeys treated us to a wonderful spectacle.
Vincere Insieme (Exceed and Excel-Loritania (Teofilo) had won his two races before the Gran Criterium where he was a four and a quarter length fourth to Don Chicco,Some Respect and Baghed just got the better of Sunny River and Alsini in one of the best finishes of the year with just a nose and a head seperating the first three. Vargiu was at his best to deprive the No Nay Never colt and Tore Sulas with Dormello Olgiata’s son of Bastiani and Silvano Mulas also fighting to the finish. A spectacular race but classic pointers for 2022, well its too early to say but all three horses are relatively inexperienced with lots of potential. One to note is Niccolo Simondi’s Gold Tango who was running on well at the finish to be fourth. Bred by Coolmore he is a son of The Gurkha and the Fastnet Rock mare Balcony a winner at Navan over a mile and sister to the dual group 2 winner Front House. The French and Hungarian challengers were easily repelled as with all the principle two year old races excepting the Berardelli where Ardakan was an easy winner. I believe this years juvenile colts are an above average lot.

If anything the Sardinian was even stronger in the Premio Rosenberg HPB 1600m €24,800) where he drove Air Bud to a nose win over Deadline whick looked unlikely everywhere except the line.Top weight Deadline winner of the Group 3 Premio Verziere in September looked all over a winner but the fast improving son of Helmet completed a hat trick of wins in this traditional handicap. The Dark Angel colt Silver Mission bred by Yeomanstown Stud was flying at the finish and was only a neck behind the runner up. Mario Esposito’s charge continues to improve and a big prize will surely come his way shortly.
The day’s richest handicap the Premio Andred (HPA 3+F 2200m €31,900) saw Colombi get well compensated for his narrow defeat in the Rosenberg where he brought the Boland/Harvey bred Thunder Panther (Night Of Thunder- Corrine) home a comfortable winner. Trained in Rome by Agostino Affe the Kilcock bred filly was set alight 500 metres from the post and won decisively from Lyrical and Rose Secret in a race dominated by greys. Affe has brought the daughter of Night Of Thunder on very carefully, she was given a runout in a Capannelle maiden in December 2019 before having five runs in her second season three of which she won. As a four year old she has been busy with her best performances coming in winning he HPB Premio Madonnina over 1800 metres and being fourth to Rose Secret in the Premio Tadolina(LR). I imagine Thunder Panther will be kept in training for one more year as with any luck this is a filly who can win listed or even group races. Her dam Corrine was a winner and placed in listed company.

Livorno is trying so hard to get back to its great days but it seems the fates are conspiring against the Tuscan venue. Saturdays meeting was to have featured its traditional big handicap the Coppa Del Mare over 2250 metres and all was set for a big day out but unfortunately after torrential rain the meeting had to be abandoned after the first race. The Coppa Del Mare will be run later in the month. At Siracusa on Saturday there were four Irish bred winners including Tanyus in the juvenile Premio Cracovia over 1800 metres. Another win for a Markaz colt who of course is taking up residence in Italy in 2022. The Lisa and Billy Kingston bred was an easy winner on only his second start for Stefano Postiglione.Today in Naples Dario Vargiu was again in top form bringing the home bred Dolce Napoli home a comfortable winner in the newcomers Premio Super Classifica Show over 1400 metres. Osamunda(Buratino) trained by Luigi Di Dio and bred by Billy Brennan was third ahead of the hot favourite Lovely Time (Gleneagles – Mooney Ridge). The easiest winner of the weekend was without question the Maria Marron bred Francesco Oppes trained Gaduli De L’Alguer (Highland Reel – Classic Falcon(Dubawi) He had twelve lengths to spare in the nine furlong Premio ANAG in Villacidro and was winning his third start in six races. Gaduli is nothing if not versatile after now winning at 1000,1200 and 1800 metres. The dam is a two time winner over a mile and is a sister to the Round Tower Stakes(G3) winner Dingle View. Highland Reel is having a great start to his career in Italy and as well as siring the champion filly Atamisque (Premio Dormello G2) is in a three way battle to be leading sire of juveniles with El Kabeir and Gleneagles. After today with three weeks left Vargiu leads the jockeys table with 110 winners to Sulas 101 and Gabriele Cannarella has 89. The trainers table is led by Alduino Botti on € 2.57 million ahead of Bruno Grizzetti on 1.015 million. Endo Botti is on just over 700 k with Sebastiano Gurrieri and Agostino Affe both very near half a milliom euro in prizemoney. These figures exclude Italian breeding bonus payments.

Siracusa’s Ippodromo Mediterraneo will celebrate its big day on December 8 with an excellent card. Siracusa is one of the most go ahead racecourses in Italy and will be celebrating its thirty first birthday on Wednesday. Eighty five runners will take their chance at the Sicilian venue thirty seven bred in Irealnd. Biggest race of the day is the Gran Premio Francesco Faraci (HPA 2,300 metres €31,900 15.35) where two former winners will be amomg the favourites. Probably the most consistent horse in Sicily over the past two years the now six year old Immortal Romance will take a lot of beating on wednesday. The Tally Ho bred son of Society Rock won the Faraci in 2019 and was runner up to the Sebastiano Guerrieri trained Anne Marie Burke bred Spirit Noir last year. He gave Brasilian Jet a kilo and a comfortable beating over course and distance three weeks ago but the son of Markaz is now four kilos better off. Diego Dettori challenges once more with the 2018 winner Desire To Fire altough a good winner in Varese last month perhaps his best days are in the past. Two Sons of Sea The Stars will challenge Star Of Wells a brother to Jessica Harrington’s Cadillac a multiple group winner and Guapo runner up in the Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa(HPB) in July and who must have a chance at the weights and has top lightweight Federico Bossa in the saddle. Top weight Keep and Love a son of Lope De Vega was third in the Carlo D’Alessio(G3) in July is the class horse in the field but the lack of a run in four months and his big weight maybe too much of a burden. The Mattock stud bred Mission Accomplise, the Sean Murphy bred Va Tutto Bene, the Clarecastle farm bred Yulong Pearlisland with Gabriele Cannarella and the Excelebration horse Wildness who has completed a hat trick of wins are others in with a shout.

Sebastiano Guerrieri hasn’t a runner in the Faraci this year but is sending Vendicarri from Rome for the Criterium Dell Immacolata (HPB 2YO 1500m €24,800 14.55). The Paul Hancock bred daughter of Buratino twice a winner in the capital was second to The Falling Man in November. My Sweetie represents the powerful Scuderia Cuschierri who had been in Rome with Guerrieri for a while before returning to Antonino Cannella. I give two other Irish breds a big chance Yelsara bred by DG Iceton a daughter of Tara Studs Estidhkaar is unbeaten in two starts and Scivolascivola a son of Zoffany bred by Prospect Stable who was a very impressive winner over a furlong longer last time out. The Premio UNIRE (HPC 1700m 16.05) will have the British bred Vincenzo Caruso trained Hernan as favourite but its a hugely competitive race. The sprint over 1200 metres is another high class race where Raifan one of last seasons top two year olds bred by Kildaragh Stud will have a battle with Rightformula Every Promise and the Jim Bradley bred Into The Wild.
