Two Days at Merano and the Criterium Varesino

The Authorities have decided after last weeks posponment of Sundays meeting at Verano to have two meetings this weekend at the Tirol track.Saturdays card will be National Hunt while Sundays eight race card will be on the flat.

The Criterium Varesino(Lr 1500m) often throws up a juvenile with classic aspirations.Bruno Grizzetti at his local track will have two strong contenders likely favourite Edith Dei Grif a close fourth in the Primi Passi, Italys equivalent of the Middle Park or Phoenix Stakes and Sopran Blakey a winner first time out and then third behind Kinkawa and Dream Or Reality who both run here. The Primi Passi which has thrown up the likes of Aria Importante,Wakanaka,Windstormblack and Baghed over the recent past was not of the same quality this year so expect a tight contest. The German raider Sienna was sixth just over two lengths behind Grizzetti’s filly while Alduino Botti’d Leoni Di Sicilia made a nice debut in Naples recently. One to watch.

The big handicap of the day the Premio Giovanni Borghi(HPC 1600m) is an intriguing contest.the likely favourite is the Alduino Botti trained Celtico Arcano who was an excellent third in the Premio Livorno(HPB 1500m) behind Ranger In Paradise. The top weight City Of Stars now nine has been a wonderful servant to the Gasparini/Turri team. The winner of sixteen races worth almost €200,000 the Brian Kennedy bred gelding is always a candidate in these type of races.Sopran Pulcinella bred by Moygaddy Stud has completed a hat trick for Grizzetti Galoppo is going to take beating as is his stablemate Lagomago an excellent winner at Milan last time out.The son of Belardo bred by Littlejohn Bloodstock might just find the trip a little sharp.Jar Jar Binks winner of last weekends Premio Novello has gone up sharply in the weights but one that might cause a surprise is Bjorn winner of the Premio Gardone(LR) at three and since then lightly raced. The Irish National Stud bred son of Acclamation will have Sergio Urru in the saddle and in a tight contest could be the one.

At Merano on Saturday the highlight is the Premio Pasqualino Mazzoni a traditional three year old hurdle which will see the Czech invader New Friend a two time winner at Pardubice as likely favourite.Of the Italians Paolo Favero runs two including the Kodiac filly Scarlet Willow as does the Aichner/Vana Junior team with Avventuroso twice placed on the level at San Siro likely to be the most likely.
In terms of quality The Premio Giuseppe Chiodini over 3300 metres features the likes of Pitton Des Neiges,Sky Constellation,Price D’Orage and Mensch continue their preparation for the big festival at the end of September. This should be an excellent race to watch tomorrow evening at 17.20.
The Tirol venue so much associated with “Ostacoli” has its flat season in August and on the last day of July on Sunday we can enjoy an excellent eight race card on the level at this beautiful venue. The juvenile Premio Delle Giovanni will see the debut of an interesting son of Australia for Nicolo Simondi who might find the Alduini Botti trained Sweet Lord his biggest opposition.
