THE ITALIAN STALLIONS OF 2021 AND PREVIEW OF THE WEEK AHEAD

Arcano,Mujahid,Sakhees Secret,El Kabeir,Highland Reel and Gleneagles are the stallions who made the headlines in Italy during 2021. Arcano standing at Allevamento Di Besnate had twenty seven individual winners including the Oaks winner Eulaila and the Parioli runner up Cirano who also won the Sbariggia. Arcano’s winners of fifty three races were worth 503,701. Sakhees Secret who died in the Autumn had thirty five individual winners of fifty one races the best of whom was Rose Secret with winnings of €316,316.The 2019 and 2020 champion didn’t have the same contribution from his finest son Out Of Time as in other years. Mujahid who has made such a contribution to Italian racing being champion sire 2016 to 2018, still had thirty one different winners of sixty races including Tiaspettofuori and Vis A Vis and €354,152. El Kabeir was the big surprise as the champion sire of juveniles producing the Gran Criterium winner Don Chicco and the Repubbliche Marinare winner Sa Filonzana amongst others with priemoney of €173,427. Its fair to say Italian trainers/owners are in love with the Yeomanstown stallion buying up most of his stock at public auction in 2021. Highland Reel has made a hugely promising start in Italy with the champion two year old filly Atamisque winner of the Premio Dormello as well as the very promising Hello I Love You and the multiple winner Gaduli De L’Alguer with prizemoney of over 130k. It is likely that the great International superstar’s produce will do better at three. Gleneagles also had a good year with for many the best two year old overall in Some Respect winner of the Criterium Varesino and the Vittorio Riva before being second in the Gran Criterium. Full Drago produced the most individual juvenile winners with eight. Other stallions who had a promising year were Aclaim and Helmet who will surely be much higher up the list nest year. We will have our two year old ratings next week where we will have an Italian trained juvenile right up there with Europe’s best.

Pisa continues its jumping season on Thursday which leads up to the group and listed races in late January and February. The Premio Narni(3500 m 5+ 14.00) is a warm up initially for the Gran Corsa Siep Di Pisa(G3 Jan23) and ultimately the Group 1 Gran Corsa Siepi Nazionale in February. In 2020 Beau Saonais completed that double for Josef Vana but the now seven year old has been off the course for almost a year and will surely be in need of the race. The Scuderia Aichner trainer also has Sternkranz a winner in Prague in September and in Cagnes Sur Mer but he might find the 3500 metres on the sharp side. Capivari third in that 2020 Gran Corsa Nazionale probably gives Vana his best chance of victory here. 2021 champion trainer Raffaele Romano will be represented by two imports Tombolo a dual winner over ten furlongs for Richard Fahey last year and Mumtaaz bred to be a champion on the flat being by Invincibile Spirit out of a sister to the dual group 1 Winner Zizi Top. Paolo Favero will also be duly represented with Dominik Pastuszka on board the San Siro winner Capitoul. A very interesting newcomer is the Chantilly listed winner Rajani who is definitely one to watch.
The Premio Monarvel (13.30) will give us an insight into the Criterium D’Inverno for four year old hurdlers where Romano’s Black Watch winner of his last four will surely start favourite. The Premio Belbuk steeplechase(12.30) will be an interesting race with Piton Des Neiges,Mensch,Precision Prince and Guena Des Mottes all with chances.

Siracusa on January 6 will bring us the Premio Gaetano Mazzarella (HPA 1600m € 31800,15.20) one of the big races of the year at the Mediterraneo. The 2020 winner Tenzing with twelve wins at the Sicilian track has been among the best horses on the island over the past two years but seems a little off form recently and has to carry 60.5 kgs (9stone 8) Adaay Secret Sicilian champion two year old in 2020 and recent winner of the Premio UNIRE( HPC) is even more burdened but has the assistance of Gabriele Cannarella. The UNIRE fourth Power Sail, fifth Chemeh, seventh Axcelerator and eight Charlie’s Jamboree all reoppose on better terms. The Mehmas colt Chemeh bred by Mountain View Stud and Tally Ho I think will be better suited by the slightly shorter trip as will Power Sail. Charlie’s Jamboree winner of the Premio Sicilia bred by WT Whittle cannot be ruled out especially with Federico Bossa in the saddle nor can the John Lyons bred Murdanova winner of the Premio Citta Di Siracusa. A very interesting race and don’t forget to watch it live here on www.italianhorseracing.com

The rest of the weekend is largely uninspiring with average fair at Rome on Friday,Siracusa again on Saturday and Pisa with a flat card on Sunday. The highlights in January will be the “Ostacoli” in San Rossore each Thursday with a super meeting on January 23.Siracusa as well as the Gaetano Mazzarella on Thursday will have the Coppa D’Oro Di Siracusa (HPB 2300m) on January 15 whilst Naples has a top class meeting on the thirty first with three handicap principales. Then in February group 1 hurdle action in Pisa and from the second half of February the build up to the classics.
