Tempesti and Devis Grilli review March 11-13

This weekend saw a short break in the guineas trials but the first Derby trial the Premio Brigadier Gerard over 2000 metres at Capannelle on Sunday. Italian racing fans like nothing better than a champion wearing the famous St Andrews crossbelts of Dormello Olgiata and they might just have one in Tempesti who simply romped home in the hands of Silvano Mulas at Rome on Sunday.

Tempesti is a home bred son of the Deep Impact stallion Albert Dock and Tender Hugs a seven time winner and sister to Gregorian Chant a brilliant winner for John Joseph Murphy before moving stateside where he was a group 3 winner in 2021.
In the ten furlong Brigadier Gerard the Riccardo Santini trained colt simply cruised into the lead three furlongs out with Mulas only using hands and heels to keep Tempesti on his way to a facile win from Agostino Affe’s North American bred Di Lido, the Botti trained Frozen Day and the ever consistent Wonka Willy fourth. Dormello’s colt will next run in either the Filiberto at San Siro or the Botticelli before the Derby. We can only believe that there is more improvement in the son of Albert Dock who is without doubt one of the potentially most exciting colts seen in Italy in quite a while.
The Ciaran Mcgrath bred filly Magnetic Eyes (Pride Of Dubai -Sliding Woman) was a good winner on only her second start when she got the better of the Highland Reel filly Her Grace in the opener over nine furlings.

San Rossore featured two handicap principales the Galileo Galilei over 2200 metres and the Federico Regoli over 1500. Both races went to representatives of Devis Grilli who enjoyed a superb four timer at the Tuscan track.Total Euphoria a son of Footstepsinthesand bred by Rabidus Bloodstock originally with Joseph O Brien came to Italy at the end of his two year old career but was largely disappointing until last autumn when he was runner up in Livorno’s Premio Inverno.Ten days ago he was a comfortable winner at San Rossore over ten furlongs before winning his biggest prize yet in the Galileo Galilei just getting the better of Reggiolo.

Another produce of Footstepsinthesand Sliding Woman bred by Eimear Mulhern carried top weight in the other Handicap Principale the Federico Regoli over 1500 metres where she failed by just a short head to another Irish Bred Guzman who was in receipt of almost two stone. Grilli’s son of Camacho and Casablanca Jewel was winning for the tenth time but this was easily his biggest win.
Grilli compleded his four timer with two promising British bred three year olds Ilgani and the Aclaim filly Woman Of Ciprea.

At Treviso the big three jumping stables all had winners Josef Vana in the opening cross country with Santa Clara, Paolo Favero with the Shalaa gelding Attlee in the four year old hurdle and Raffaele Romano with Assassin in the 15 furlong hurdle. The jumping scene will now move to San Siro next weekend.

Italian stallions haven’t had much luck in group 1 races recently but in Australia this weekend Roch n Horse a daughter of the Premio Tudini winner Per Incanto won the Yulong Stud Newmarket stakes over six furlongs.Per Incanto was trained by Roberto Brogi and bred by the Scuderia Archi Romani who also bred the Nassau stakes winner Lady Bowthorpe. In New Zealand Uarestar a daughter of the Gran Premio di Milano winner Jakkalberry(trained by Endo Botti) won the group 2 Auckland Cup while in the US the Nicola Galli bred Dolce Zel won the group 3 Florida Oaks. Are we beginning to see some green shoots?

Racing this week will be at Capannelle on Tuesday,Friday and Sunday when we can enjoy a top class card with the listed Premio Natale Di Roma over a mile and the also black type Premio Circo Massimo over ten furlongs. Also on the card will be two key Guineas trials the Torricola for fillies and the Daumier for colts.
Pisa will race on Thursday and Sunday while Siracusa and Treviso will host cards on Saturday.
San Siro will be back with a two day meeting on Saturday and Sunday with two guineas trials on the opening day and some high class jumping on the Sunday. Its always a pleasure to see racing return to one of the Worlds most beautiful racetracks.
