Pisa in many ways the very heartland of Italian ‘Galoppo’ will enjoy on Sunday
its most traditional race and an excellent supporting card. The 2022 version will see the 132nd running of the Premio Pisa won by some of the finest horses Italy has produced such as Barbara Sirani,Filiberto,Nogara,Archidamia,Capo Bon and of course the incomparable Ribot. First run in 1885 it is considered the most important Parioli trial but eleven winners have also gone on to win the Derby. Its really good to see that Irish Thoroughbred Marketing are the new sponsors of the race in 2022 which is a wide open affair. Ten runners line up at 17.00 on Sunday evening the top five in the ratings officially seperated by a single pound. Frankie Dettori has been booked by EC Racing to ride the Churchill colt Il Grande Gatsby an impressive winner of his two starts in 2022.The favourite is likely to be Bahja Del Sol with Dario Vargiu in the saddle. The Joe O Leary bred son of The Gurkha has already won the Premio Daumier this year and is very consistent. His stablemate Sunny River a half brother to the 2015 Premio Pisa winner by No Nay Never was runner up in the Criterium Di Pisa as a juvenile and is likely to improve from the race.Diego Dettori runs two interesting runners Wings of War and the Helmet colt Vecello already winner of the Premio Thomas Rook over course and distance in March. Another March course and distance winner is Devis Grilli’s Ilgani whose booking of Tore Sulas is interesting. Agostino Affe sends Costantinus a good winner on his debut and then runner up in the Daumier while on two year old form one could make a very strong case for the Criterium Nazionale winner The Kings Horses who disappointed a little when only fourth in the Thomas Rook.An intriquing contest which should give us some strong pointers to the Parioli.
The other Listed race on the card
the Regione Toscana(2200m) will see Brigante Sabino as favourite. The son of Zoffany won both the Gran Premio D’Italia and Premio UNIRE as well as being fourth in the Gran Premio Del Jockey Club in his second season. He is clearly the class horse in the field and if fully fit should win.Clarenzio Fan,Lyrical and Unique Diamond are the ones most likely to give Dario Vargiu’s mount most to do although it will be interesting to see how those two tough handicappers Mr Gualano (bred by Matt Duffy) and Total Euphoria(bred by Rabidus Bloodstock)get on.
At Milan on Sunday the Premio Giulio Caccia (LR 3200 m hurdle) is the feature and is always very informative with regard to the Group 1 Gran Corsa Siepi Di Milano which this year takes place on April 25.This years renewal is a very dificult race to work out as form has to be collated from France,Poland and the Czech republic as well as Italy.Perhaps Josef Vana seniors Dschingis First sixth in the German Derby in his second season and his son’s Caroubier a listed winner at Pau might be the two against the field.
Today in Capannelle EC racings Sphere Of Fire bred by Noreen and Liam O Donovan was a very impressive winner of the Premio Carlo Chiesa over six furlongs. This race for fillies three year olds and upwards was a group 3 race until 2015 and listed until 2020. Its downgrading in a country crying out for high class sprint races for all horses but especially fillies is simply counterproductive and damaging to professionals in Italy and breeders all over Europe especially in Ireland.
The Dawn Approach filly who was runner up to Aria Importante in last years Premio Nogara will surely now be aimed at the Group 3 Premio Tudini on Derby day.
The Premio San Giuseppe a Derby trial over 2100 metres went to the Gerald Colclough bred Wonka Willy who is a most consistent colt.Sebastiano Guerrieri’s son of Estidhkaar just got the better of The Gurkha colt Frozen Day by a nose with Lohengrin( Albert Dock)a short head further back. The stewards later reversed the minor placings. Wonka Willy might not be a major candidate to win the Derby but he is a most genuine sort who will win his share of good quality races.
