Italy’s 2000 guineas the Premio Parioli has been won by some wonderful horses over the years not least Nearco,Botticelli,Raeburn(Ribot’s half brother by Botticelli)Capo Bon and Ramonti(Enjoy the video of perhaps Alduino Botti’s finest racehorse until now).
Irish trained winners have been scarce two in fact both from Dermot Weld and ridden by Mick Kinane.
Again Tomorrow(Honest Pleasure-Falafel(Northern Dancer) won in 1985.Top class milers were in the family his half brother Brief Truce won the Saint James Palace Stakes.
In 1988 Kinane steered home Gay Burslem to victory.John Weld bred the son of Burslem and Gayshuka(Lord Gayle)A decade later another son of Gayshuka won the Parioli, Crisos Il Monaco(Common Grounds) trained by the great Luigi Camici.
The 2021 Parioli has been overshadowed at least in the build up by the star laden Regina Elena(1000 guineas)Nevertheless it promises to be an exciting race.Thirteen go to post including the 2020 Gran Criterium winner and two year old champion Vis a Vis(Mujahid-Annaelia) who was a little disappointing on his return when only a close fourth in the Gardone behind Bjorn, and Mordimi.
French champion Pierre Charles Boudot takes the ride on the latter whose only defeat in four starts was in the Gardone..Mordimi(Morpheus-Miss Frangipane(Acclamation) was bred by Ann and John Foley of GHS bloodstock Limerick as was the Roberto Biondi trained outsider Fayathaan(along with Mullingar’s Tally Ho) three times a winner in Britain.
Alduino Botti has two other strong candidates, the War Command colt Closer Look ridden by Italy’s Seamie Heffernan,Salvatore Sulas.Closer Look who won the Daumier narrowly from Terrible Land and Please Exceed. This is a race which often produces the Parioli winner, unfortunately the Sean O Sullivan bred Please Exceed misses the race.
Terrible Land trained by Antonio Marcialis had previously got the better of Closer Look in the Arconte over the course and distance with Bjorn fourth.Bjorn a son of Acclamation-Apace)(Oasis Dream)was bred by the National Stud and of course went on to win the Gardone.
The Premio Pisa a historical race in its own right and is traditionally the most reliable trial. The 2018 and 2019 winners Wait Forever and Out Of Time both went on to classic glory and nobody can discount the Nicholas Teehan bred Lord Bay(Excelebration-Miss Chaumiere)
The Kilkenny bred colt comfortably got the better of Cirano previously the winner of the Thomas Rook and Collinsbay and at four wins from six all in good company has more experience than most.
Bruno Grizzetti’s horses are never to be ruled out in an Italian classic so don’t discount the promising but inexperienced Wopart(Helmet-Arte Volante)who is two from three and will stay the mile better than most.
An intriguing race with seven of the thirteen runners bred in Ireland so hope of a Kilkenny,Limerick Westmeath or Kildare success are high but I take the home bred Vis A Vis who was giving seven pounds in the Gardone to return to top form under Antonio Fresu in tremendous form in the Middle East and to just get the better of Mordimi and Lord Bay.
