Latest News, Weekend preview August 28-29

Italian buyers were active at the Goffs Doncaster August yearling sales this week showing a confidence in the future that is not always apparent. The biggest buyers quantity wise were the New Racing Factory of Gianluca Di Castelnuova who bought fourteen horses almost all of who will go into training with Diego Dettori or Vincenzo Caruso. Sebastiano Guerrieri was also busy buying five yearlings with others such as Antonio Caracciolo, Federico Barberini and Marco Botti also  purchasing. They were one or two very interesting purchases Botti purchased an Exceed and Excel-Simmy’s Temple colt, New Racing a Zoffany filly out of Santa Teresa  and Guerrieri two offspring of Bated Breath the sire of Windstormblack. On Saturday at the Ippodromo Le Bettole of Varese we can enjoy one of the best handicaps of the year the Premio Citta Di Varese (HPA) over 2250 metres. The off time is 21,50 Irish time so watch it live here and enjoy a super competitive handicap with five of the twelve strong field bred in Ireland. Fambrus carrying the top weight of 63.5 kilos (10stone) is the class horse in the field arguably the best stayer in the country winner of this years Coppa D’Oro(LR) over 3000 metres and last years Premio Lombardia(HPA) over 2400 metres. Dario Vargiu’s mount will probably start favourite but the key race may have been the Premio Famiglia Pastorelli here over 2300 mettres last month when Desire To Fire just got the better of Tout a Fais, Miracle Of Love and Allimac. The handicapper has been at work and perhaps the Fournaughts Stud bred Allimac (Acclamation-Kanshe) might just reverse those placings at the weights. Clarenzio Fan also represents Team Botti  and cant be discounted nor can Lexington Quest bred by Manister House Stud who will find this trip to his liking. In these types of races never ever rule out Marco Gasparini and Francesca Turri and Caterpillar an eight time winner including the Premio Monterosa(HPB) over 3000 metres will be a big fancy. The Lope De Vega colt Tout a Fais is the other Gasparini representative. One who I think might have a big say is the only three year old in the field Velo Dipinto (Golden Horn-Alta Fedelta) therefore a half sister to Brasilian Man for many the best middle distance horse in Italy. By a top derby winner out of a group three winning sprinter she has only raced four times but only carries fifty one kilos and has the assistance of top light weight Federico Bossa. She was a good winner in Milan, has huge potential but lacks a little experience.

Varese also stages the Premio S.I.R.E. for two year olds over 1500 metres. Bruno Grizzetti’s juveniles have been in top form and the local trainer runs two here Azul Bahia (Ringfort Stud) fourth to Ultimo Tango on her debut and the newcomer Lagomago (Ennell Lodge Stud Mullingar).Alduino Botti runs Musicante a winner on his debut and then fifth in the Criterium Varesino behind Some Repect. However the favourite will be the  Riccardo Santini trained, Dormello-Olgiata owned and bred Alsini who was so impressive on his debut at Merano over this trip. Alsini will be expected to win this before challenging for bigger prizes.

On Sunday in Merano another excellent card with the focus switching back to jumping as September beckons and the reopening of San Siro and Capannelle.Gangster de Coddes perhaps the most exciting chasing prospect in Italy since L’Estran arrived on the scene will be the hot favourite for the group 3 Premio Piero e Franco Richard over 3800 metres. A brilliant winner of the group 2 Ezio Vanoni before an equally impressive win last time out in the Vincenzo Pollio the Secret Singer five year old will be expected to win here although Peace Garden, Salcret and Lady Minx are all good horses.
