2020 saw an above average group of juvenile fillies but a moderate collection of colts.I believe the opposite was the case in 2021.Windstormblack lit up the early two year old scene with three devastating victories culminating in the Premio Primi Passi where Sebastiano Guerrieri’s son of Brazen Beau simply toyed with two other unbeaten youngsters Baghed (RPR 106) and The Kings Horses. On his debut Windstormblack beat the subsequent Gran Criteium winner Don Chicco Six lengths over the minimum trip in just over 56 seconds then put fourteen lengths on Stay Kitten in the Alberto Giubilo before the performance of the season in the Primi Passi where Gabriele Cannarella spent most of the last furlong searching for the opposition. Baghed was five lenghts back but it could have been ten if the Sicilian jockey had got to work. Vincenzo Fazio sent the runner up a son of Twilight Son to Chantilly for the Robert Papin where he was a two and a half lenghts second to Atomic Force and then for the Morny where he got into all sorts of dificulty but was still less than three lengths off the winner Perfect Power who went on to win the Middle Park Stakes. He then returned to Italy finishing third in the Gran Criterium and winning the Rumon. The Kings Horses only had one run after the Primi Passi comfortably winning the Criterium Nazionale. On a line through the ultra consistent Baghed Windstormblack is superior to Perfect Power(RPR 115) and Atomic Force(RPR 109) so his loss to Italian racing can be easily gauged. Italian flat racing in many ways is similar to the Irish jumping scene of the late eighties and early nineties when most of the best horses are sold abroad simply to keep the show on the road. Guerrieri has invested heavily in the yearling sales in 2021 so we can expect some more exciting talent to emerge from Rome this year. From Italy’s point of view let us hope the hoped for reform of the sector is as effective as Irelands National Hunt’s policies have been.

Don Chicco(RPR 108) proved himself a much better colt over a mile than five furlongs with his wins in the Giuseppe De Montel and especially the Gran Criterium where the El Kabeir colt was clearly better than Some Respect(RPR 105 Gleneagles)) who had been so impressive in the Criterium Varesino and the Vittorio Rivo where he was four lenghts too good for Agostino Affe’s colt. Grizzetti’s youngster for some inexplicable reason did not look to be the same horse we had seen earlier. Fourth in the Gran Criterium was the Exceed and Excel colt Vincere Insieme who won his other three starts including the Criterium Di Pisa. Just behind Botti’s colt was another Sebastiano Guerrieri juvenile who started and finished the year very well.Anthony Byrne of County Dublin bred Il Sindicalista (Bungleinthejungle-Mirandassister) who was clearly better at six or seven furlongs than a mile. He started out with two very impressive wins over five and seven furlongs before losing his way over the mile.He returned to Rome in November winning the Premio Ice Cool from La Cortigiana and Ask My Glory over six furlongs.

The colours made World famous by Ribot,Nearco,Botticelli and so many others were carried by two promising colts in 2021 Tempesti who will be a Derby candidate and Alsini who will be aimed at the Parioli. Tempesti a son of Albert Dock out of Tender Hugs, so from the family of Tisserand who in the 1988 Italian Derby and Gran Premio Di Milano had Carroll House and Tony Bin as his runners up. Those two went to win the next two Prix De L’arc de Triomphe’s so even the EPC might have given that derby a G1. Riccardo Santini and Dormello clearly have a horse to dream about as he cruised to victory in both his maiden over 1900 metres and the Premio Time Charter(1800).In his other two runs he had been runner up to the Joe O Leary bred Bahja Del Sol and the beautifully bred Australia colt Arrival. The latter a half brother to Brasilian Man will be Alduino and Stefano Botti’s big derby hope over the winter a neck winner from Tempesti and then a good winner of the Campobello from the Gerald Colclough bred Wonka Willy a very consistent son of Estidhkaar who went on to be third to the German invader Ardakan in the Guido Berardelli and then sixth to Temtesti.
