Brigante Sabino was a most impressive winner of the Premio Unire (LR 2250 m € 38,500) at Naples on Saturday.Dario Vargiu had only to use hands and heels to bring the Zoffany colt home a very easy winner from the ever consistent Unique Diamond and the three year old filly Zanfogna third with Prince Appeal fourth. The Robert Ogden bred Zoffany colt can develop into a serious middle distance horse in 2022 with an obvious early season target the Premio Carlo D’Alessio (G3 2400m).After that the sky is the limit but obviously the Gran Premio Di Milano would be a race his trainer would have in mind. Alduino Botti will have a very strong hand in 2022 with middle distance four year olds with the likes of Flag’s Up( OR 114) Atzeco (104 RPR),Mooney Love(RPR 104) the lightly raced Frankel colt Vento Di Passioni as well as Brigante Sabino (RPR 104) without mentioning the Oaks winner Eulaila. I would imagine the placed horses will be aimed at the Premio Piazza Dei Miracoli(LR 2200m) on Saint Stephens Day in Pisa with a question mark on the Team Botti challenger. Brigante Sabino is a full brother to Alooqaal a juvenile with Mick Halford who was placed on his third run in Dundalk last month. They are both out of the Galileo mare Natural Bloom a winner over 1900 metres and sister to Tashawak winner of the Falmouth stakes (G1),Acropolis fourth in the Prix De L’Arc to Bago and Fairy Queen winner of the Prix De Royallieu(G2).
The Premio Capri for two year olds also in Naples saw the Arcano colt Parco Sempione win for the second time in three starts and in the process further boost the form of Roberto Biondi’s unbeaten colt Que Tempesta (bred by Mount Coote Estate) who was over six lengths ahead in the Premio Dormelletto over 1800 metres. Second was another son of Arcano Celtico Aracano with Autre Etape third and a disappointing The Falling Man fourth. The winner is trained by Fabrizio Camici a member of the legendary family responsible for four winners of the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe. He will be aimed at some of the classic trials in the spring ahead of a hoped for attempt on the Parioli.
Another impressive two year old is Zia Polly (The Gurkha – Emirates Joy bred by Ciaran Flash Conroy’s Glenvale Stud along with Lynch Bages) The Laura Di Stefano trained filly had won over a mile on her debut and again at Siracusa this time in a trip one hundred metres further was much too good for My Henry and Tanyus (bred by Lisa and Billy Kingston) a winner in Siracusa two weeks previously. After Musician and now Ruler Of The World standing in Italy it would surprise no one if The Gurkha also ended up in the Peninsula. Speaking of Ruler Of The World his son Honey World made a very promising debut in the Premio Robert Livermore over 2000 metres in Pisa on Sunday when running on late to dead heat with Draga Flower for second behind Call For Drago. Honey World is out of Querida a sister of Quito a multiple listed winner and placed in group one sprints. The daughter of Rainbow Quest has already produced a Botticelli winner Freedom Beel and Full Of Lying a winner of several handicap principale’s for Team Botti. The other two protagonists in the race are members of the first crop of Full Drago perhaps the best Italian middle distance horse over the past few years.
The two Demuro brothers were the stars in Japan over the weekend with Mirco riding the winner of the group 1 Hanshin stakes the most important juvenile race for fillies and brother Cristian in the land of the rising Sun until the new year who rode a treble. Amilcar a son of Wooton Bassett provided Team Botti with another listed winner in Deauville on Saturday. The five year old is trained by Alessandro and Giuseppe at Chantilly and was winning his second listed race in France.
Racing this week is in Naples on Tuesday, Varese Wednesday, Pisa on Thursday featuring the Premio Balorain steeplechase over 3,500 metres, Rome on Friday with Siracusa Villacidro and Livorno on Saturday with the Premio Inverno (HPC 2250m) at the Tuscan track, Pisa on Sunday with Naples and Villacidro on Monday with the Gran Premio Citta Di Villacidro (2400m) in Sardinia.
