Botticelli doesn’t paint a clear Derby picture while NH sees French resisted

The Highlight of Sunday’s supporting card at Capannelle was the Premio Botticelli one of the two great Derby Italiano trial’s named after one of Tesio’s masterpieces not the great artist. Before the event we thought that this could be the race where Sopran Poseidone would return to his brilliant two year old form or that one of Alduino Botti’s beautifully bred but inexperienced colts would light up the stage. But as with the Parioli the professional battlers allied to an ambitious trainer won the day.                                        Tiaspettofuori in his ninth race under an inspired Dario Di Tocco just got the better of the Ringfort stud bred Rio Natal with Sopran Poseidone a half length away followed by a fast finishing Mooney Love.As with all the colts trials this year inconclusive but Tiaspettofuori’s win points to the possibilities of the Frankel colt Vento di Passione who comfortably got the better of Grilli’s horse last time out and Grizzetti’s also two from two son of Zoffany Tomiz.   Rio Natal(Sir Prancealot-Dansalong(Azamour) ran the race of his life and is clearly on the upgrade while Sopran Poseidone came out the best horse in the race giving 3.3 pounds. The Filiberto in Milan next Sunday is the next installment.(photograph above shows the battle)

The Italian three year old fillies on the other hand are in my opinion  superior to the colts and a serious Oaks candidate was seen in the Premio Alberto Da Rozzano(10f) as Cima Star(Sea The Stars-Snowfield)cruised to a comfortable victory from Biondi’s Sadalsuud.    There is no better man than Fabio Branca to gradually bring on a promising horse and this half sister to an Ambrosiano(G3 10f)and a Carlo D’alessio(G3 12f) winner by the great Sea The Stars is already justifying the 160,000 gns paid by Sr.Borsani at the Milan SGA yearling sales in 2019.Grizzetti’s filly was very impressive and may have one more run before the Oaks on June 6.

Although out of luck in the Regina Elena the Endo Botti/Cristina Brivio team are having great success with their fillies. They brought back two Italian breds on Sunday after long absences and both won very well. Wonderful World(Ruler of the World-Aischa)was one of the favourites for last year’s 1000 but performed poorly and after  a 315 day absence, was a very good winner of the Pio Settimi(10f) under Dario Di Tocco from the high class Elisa Again and last years classic winner Granatina.                                                                  Wannacry(Footstepsinthesand-Kykuit) had a similar spring to her stablemate in 2020 fancied for the Regina Elena but she on the other hand did not stay the mile.Wannacry did return in the listed Premio Nogara over seven furlongs and won well but after a long lay off returned in the six furlong Carlo Chiesa(another race thats a victim of Italian admin and the European pattern committee)Wannacry won very well and will be a force in the top Sprints.

On Sunday in Milan there was a top class National Hunt card(Ostacoli)where all the French invaders were defeated but there was no stopping the man from Pardubice Jan Faltejsek who rode the winners of a Group 1 and a Group 2 hurdle, a steeplechase and a cross country for three different trainers. The Group 1 Gran Corsa Siepi Di Milano was a battle between the Czech Dominique already a group 3 winner in Pisa in January and Richard Chotard’s Edinson a prolific winner in France and in February of the Group 1 Gran Corsa Siepi Nazionale at Pisa.Dominique a seven year old trained by Pavel Tuma won under strong driving from Faltejsek.

The Group two four year old hurdle was also won by Tuma and Faltejsek with the German bred Roncal who had a good battle with Paolo Favero’s Big City.                                                The Group 2 Berlingieri for three year old hurdlers was set up as a battle between the Polish Ocean Life and Raffaele Romano’s Callistemon. The latter won that battle but could not resist his stablemate Sopran Spencer who came late to surprise everyone. The great Federico Tesio always claimed top class hurdlers should come from miler’s so Sopran Spencer certainly fits that bill being by the Parioli winner Malossol.

We enjoyed a rare Irish bred winner over jumps when Quinze De La Rose(Turtle Bowl-Bal de La Rose)won the Giacomo Durrini one of the main trials for the Gran Steeplechase Di Milano. The winner is a half brother to Danceteria a group 1 winner over ten furlongs in Germany in 2019.
